T42 - Mobility 9600/64MB or T43 - Mobility x300/256MB?

#1 Post by Frosty » Tue Mar 13, 2007 12:32 pm

Hello, should I choose a T42 with Mobility Radeon 9600/64MB or a T43 with Mobility Radeon x300/256MB (definitely hypermemory, I think the on board VRAM is only 64MB)? The price is similar, specs are similar, etc etc... Graphics performance is important, as I game quite a fair bit on my thinkpad (yes, I know ThinkPads aren't gaming laptops). I know the T42 is definitely IBM, but how do I tell whether a T43 is IBM or Lenovo? Thanks.

Why not get a t4xP?

You thinking about a mobo upgrade or whole laptop purchase?

Id say get a T42P, thats my 2 cents.

Whole laptop purchase. What graphics cards do the T42Ps have? ATI FireGL?

PS Is the 9600 better or the x300? Some say 9600, some say x300...

If it has 64MB onboard, the hypermemory ought to be 128MB. Are you certain it is 256MB?

The T43 is just as much IBM as the T42, actually - produced and assembled at the same locations and use many of the same parts.

The T42P has the FireGL-T2 which was also found in T41P.

9600 vs. x300: 9600. It does score about 2000-2500 more in 3dmark2k1, but the x300 scales slightly better with 3dmark03, so they're more even there. A 3dmark01 thread should be revealed if you do a search. EDIT: That being said, in actual games, i don't think there is that much difference to justify discussing wether one should choose x300 or 9600

Also, the 9600 ~x600 in some areas. The core they use is even the same as the x300, just the clock speeds are different, and the X-series is always PCI-E.

If you game a lot, and frame rates are really important, i'd still recommend you a desktop, or at least a laptop with one of nVidias options, like the 7800 og 7900. :)

The T43s are a different chipset(915 ~PCI Express) so its mobo is pretty different to the T40,T41, and T42, the casing,LCD,removable drive is the same thats probablly it, since the lcd inverter, cable, cpu, memory, hard drive-firmware special, long hs fan,pcmcia/pc card, are all different.

The T42P has the ATI Fire GL T2 128mb (AGP)

IMO the X300 is going to be quicker but not even noticable though

If you get a T43(P) make sure you get it with a 7200rpm drive your happy with. That 2010 error with my HD drives me nuts. T42s are uneffected because of there chipset ~controller.

I'm getting vista-aera on an older T43: 1.86ghz/7200rpm/1.5gig ram/x300.

My vista score:

3.8 processor
4.4 ram
2.0 graphics
3.2 gaming graphics
4.4 hard drive

So even if the 9600 is abit faster, the memory limit may hold you back if you plan to go vista now or in the future, right?
