Need Z60 series Feedback

#1 Post by JHEM » Tue Mar 13, 2007 2:41 pm

I have an opportunity to pick up a Z60m (2529-GBU) for a price that's attractive to me for what will probably end up being an extra, extra, extra Thinkpad.

(Please don't ask the price, it's a faculty offering not available to Forum members at large.)

Yeah, I know, first of the month and Uncle Sam has coughed up my check so I'm feeling flush!

I have absolutely no experience with the Z series Thinkpads whatsoever, I've only ever seen them up close at product rollouts.

I'm attracted to the unit primarily for its 15.4" WSXGA+ display resolution as I feel that would be the easiest for me to become comfortable given that my other daily drivers are a 14" SXGA+ and a 15" UXGA.

My question for the collective is, is this a unit I should be considering or should I hold out for something "better"? Please define better, if you believe it exists.

Regards,

James

I own a Z60m, it's a very good machine just apart from its weight, perhaps perfect for desktop replacement.

Here are few pics:

I say grab it.

Sorry, I don't know but "better" would be hopefully the upcoming T6X.

I too own a Z60m (2529-EAU) and I've never regretted getting it. It works great and I like it far more that I did my X22. The Z is quite a bit heftier than the other ThinkPads that I've seen (mainly the T4x series and my X22).

If I had the opportunity I would it, if I didn't have mine already. And as ryengineer mentioned, the only thing better would probably be the new T6x series (and presumably the widescreen series).

Just my thoughts...

Captain James,

I have read through many posts about Z series thinkpad complains and praises everywhere on the web and could tell you frankly that if you get a Z series thinkpad, it is either a perfect machine :-) or a bad lemon. :-(

I have a Z60T here and it works like a charm but my classmate\\\'s Z60T is the bad lemon because it comes with dead pixels, followed by many hardware and software problems and problems have not yet been thoroughly solved from last year till now.

You can get a Z series to add into your thinkpad collection but do a thorough check before accepting it as the bad lemon types will run into many problems as the day go by...

No, not entirely true.

The problems I saw were all GPU related...

There are nicer ways to put that. Find one.

I really enjoy my Z60m (2529-RCU). It has all of the little flaws that the Z Series has, but it's a solid machine. I don't think it's too heavy or too big, but I was looking for a machine that would make a semi-decent desktop replacement.

I certainly like my Z61p. It does every thing I want. I have not had any significant issues with it (but, I have only had the machine for 1.5 months). I will say that default install of WIndows XP performed abysmally (at least in VirtualPC). This remained true even after removing all (not including software needed for functionality -- eg. fingerprint reader) of the value-added software provided by lenovo. A fresh install, and I am able to run multiple Vitual PC instances easily.

I absolutely love my Z60m. However, there are a few negative things about it:

- laptop is more on the heavier side (which doesn't bother me so much)
- problems with overheating (can be controlled with NHC and Arctic Silver 5)
- recent battery recall (at least mine was one of it)

Otherwise it's a very solid machine for both business use and entertainment. I had an Intel wireless card pre-installed which always caused some trouble with disconnecting. I've replaced it with an Atheros card and it's running smooth as never before.

I you get a good deal I would go for it !
Thinkpad Z60m and happy with it
