R40 fan problems

#1 Post by mypointz » Tue Mar 13, 2007 8:42 pm

I just replaced the fan in my R40 thinkpad as it was shutting down tandomly due to overheating...however, the fan heats up when I am viewing streaming audio/video content. Can anyone help pinpoint the problem?? I am thinking the CPU is not powerful enough to handle streaming multimedia content.

You might want to check for the presence of heatsink compound between the CPU core and the heatsink. My R40 came with very little and it had dried up when I upgraded the CPU.

The CPU should be powerful enough - if you have a Pentium-M one anyway. I have no problems with a 1.3 GHz Pentium-M R40 when viewing streamed multimedia content. The fan does go and plenty of warm air is shot out the side of the computer though.

@thread OP,

Open up the thinkpad. Dust out the fan, clean out the old paste and apply a new thin layer of ArticSilver 5 on the CPU.

(Credits should go to benottomex) :-)
