White T23 currently on eBay

#1 Post by rkawakami » Wed Mar 14, 2007 10:40 am

Ran across this during my usual perusal of eBay's inventory:

Custom White IBM Thinkpad T23 (ends Mar-18-07 20:18:53 PDT)

And no, I'm not going to bid on it.

edit: Added end time to auction

How dare he downgrade a thinkpad by making it look like a dang iBook!:flame: I HATE white laptops. They become an eye sore, and show wear and dirt better than the classic Thinkpad black does. That T23 is ugly! A good machine that an owner hod to go ruin.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Uggg, maybe he should throw on a few bumper stickers, that might beautify it even more; some people's taste!

Yukk! That guy must be color blind!

Very little interest in it so far. (serves him right for defacing such a nice laptop!)

The lack of interest may be due to people planning to snipe. It's got over 4 days left to go. I'll go out on a limb and say that it will close at $217 (including shipping).

I don't really mind white laptops. In fact I'm trying to win one this week :) . It'll go good next to my iMac.

My guess is he colored it just to hide the scratches on the original body.

I agree, he probably is trying to hide an original battered case; I like how he says "he painted it and it doesn't look too bad".

I always hated when I would rent apartments throughout my life and find these lovely older buildings with solid wooden window casements, painted over with green paint (or white or pink, etc) It made me grit my teeth and swear.

I can understand wanting to personalize a laptop. I can understand painting one.

I cannot understand doing a half assed job. It's quite clear he only did the lcd assembly and upper plastics. That would take me half an afternoon.

Cool laptop mods do exist.

Google 'Tronbook'.

Pure sweetness right there.

I'll go ahead and bust out my flame suit, but I don't think the white T23 looks too bad. Granted it's too white, and the keyboard would need a color change too...but it has hope.

Ray, again with the radio contests? You'll probably win too.

Yes, you know Ray needs ONE more laptop :D I wish you luck though.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like anyone who liked this white laptop was tacky, white is not my favorite color, that's all. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Are we trying to guess the ending price here? If so, I say $187.

I might even bid on this one, due to the lack of interest in it. I have all the parts needed to turn it into a Black Thinkpad again.

Yeah, it's a bad habit that I have. I got through this morning (phone line was ringing) and the first two people they selected didn't know the answer. So here I am listening to the radio in one ear, the ringing phone in the other, hoping that they get to me. The third person, out of 8 phone lines going into the studio, finally answered correctly. I was this close (holding finger an thumb apart by this much--> =).

The trip to Australia that the station is also giving away this week, I can't qualify for :( . My passport expired last year and it would take me too long to apply for a replacement before the trip.

Oh well... this weekend I'm trying for tickets to see Genesis. Wife said she'll buy them Sunday if I don't win. Where's the fun in that? :)

And yes Steve, I'll entertain guesses on the final sale price of this laptop. However, if you end up bidding on it and win at $187, I'll cry foul  !

I am jealous, saw Genesis several times in my twenties (not ever going to say how long ago that was!) and also another favorite - King Crimson. Enjoy Ray.

First, shame on you for letting it expire Ray!

Second, you can still get one within 14 days, would that give you enough time before the OZ trip leaves?

I remember getting my first passport, took a whole day at the NYC passport office.

Yeah, I could go up to SanFran and stand in line, pay the "extra" processing fees, and probably get it in time (trip is Apr 7-14), but I still have the problem of WHO I'd take on the trip. Wife just increased her hours at work to three days a week and the youngest daughter is still in school.

Well Ray, if you need a volunteer to go to OZ, I'll consider volunteering. We'd probably have to spend some time with my relations there, and then of course the NZ contingent would be jealous and we'd have to spend a week or two with them.

Probably keep us full of Toohey's and Full Sail the whole time too.

As to computers back in the day, there was some talk of a guy named Babbage having something steam powered....

if everything but the IBM logo and the colour highlights were completely inverted from black to white, or if it had been painted grey or silver (or a colour similar to what the bezel looks like in the Ubuntu screen pic), it might actually look interesting. But it's just too stark a contrast with that white

Well, if the laptop stays low enough in price, I might bid on it. Of course, if I were to get it, the first order of business for me would be to remove the LCD panel and wristpad and replace them with the ones on my T21. Luckily the guy didn't paint the bottom chassis so there's still some hope of bringing this laptop back to normal.

So ugly. But I am really interested how to paint a laptop. Buy paint from HomeDepot and paint it directly? Any pre- and post-work needed?

By the way, I have an apple ibook. It does not look ugly. Actually, I like it.

Actually it wouldn't be any different than painting a rubber/urethane bumper on a car. An adhesion promoter and maybe a flex agent.........hmmmmmmm.......I wonder how much a lime green one would bring on eBay????

Yeech! :)

I'm surprised that it got to $300. But looking at the bidding history, bidder #11 started pumping up the price only a couple of minutes from the end of the auction. He/she has also been on eBay for less than ONE DAY. That could be a novice or shill bidder. Still, the high bidder seems to be a valid one since he/she placed the winning $300 bid a few minutes from the end and THEN also placed another one, less than a minute later, for some figure higher than $300, possibly to "insure" a win.
