T21 went dead after got heated inside of a car

#1 Post by elportugues » Thu Mar 15, 2007 9:39 pm

I left the computer inside of a car and the heat inside damage the computer. Now I am trying to turn it up with no luck. The power light
try to light up but turn off again.

I used the battery, Screen and the modem card on another T21 and they are working OK.

Which part of the computer might be damaged?

Thanks for your comments!

If the problem with your laptop is:

- when you press the power button, the only response you get is the hard drive LED flashing just once
- no fan spinning
- no video display or backlight
- no sounds
- no other indications that the system is alive

then, that suggests you have what has been called the "blink of death". It is common enough in T21 and T22 systems (I have one of each).

Sometimes the laptop will turn on again after a (long) period of time. It seems to help to remove the main battery and AC adapter for several days. There has also been some suggestions that after you remove power, you press the power button 10-20 times and then hold it down for 10-20 seconds. People have reported that this helps; it has not worked for my systems.

My guess is that something on the motherboard has worked loose and is preventing the power up sequence. I don't think that the inside of your car got hot enough to melt the solder on the board, but that heat may have caused some thermal expansion, which could have caused the problem. About the only thing you can easily do is to re-seat the CPU. Turn the locking screw to release the CPU, lift it up slightly, then place it back down in the socket and turn the screw to lock it in place, while at the same time, pushing down on the CPU slightly.
