Need help ASAP with hard drives for T43!!

We have several T43s that we use in court to display evidence. All the hard drives are under 80GB. I just got a case where the data won't fit on these drives.

I don't know anything about buying hard drives for a laptop. What's the largest drive I can get for the T43 and where can I get it? I need to buy ASAP.

You can go up to 160 GB.
Here are two models from newegg.com, for instance :

What you have to check the disk has :
- ATA Interface (SATA won't work in a T4x)
- 2.5 inches form factor

and that's pretty much it.

Just to make I understand what you said, those 2 drive would definitely work in the T43 but if I was looking at any others I'd have to check they ATA and 2.5" form factor, right?

Can I just clone my old drive onto the new one so I don't have to reinstall everything? Are there any problems in doing that?

Why not use an external USB2.0 drive ?

We do use an external drive also. We have super duper redundancy.

The case resides on the internal laptop drive, the secondary swap drive and an external drive.

When the case is worth $400 million dollars I try to make sure there's no chance of losing that data!

T43's will generate a 2010 error on boot up if a non-Lenovo drive is used. Some people have been able to hack the firmware to get around this error. Check the sticky.

If you clone, there should be no problem, but you need to have the destination drive in the T43 drive bay. Some cloning programs require special switches (Ghost requires -IB switch). If you buy the Ultraslim Bay 2nd Hard Drive Adapter from Lenovo, it should come with cloning software. See hard drive and cloning FAQs on this forum for more info.

Oh boy, that's starting to sound complicated.. . .

Ok, are the two drive mentioned above the only ones I should consider? The one has terrible reviews.

What about a simpler solution. Could you enable compression on the folders or partitions where the data is kept?

I think you can afford to buy a drive diirectly from Lenovo. Problem solved.

I would definitely by the Lenovo drives but 100GB isn't big enough.

You can buy the Ultraslim Bay 2nd Hard Drive Adapter, and use it in place of your optical drive. That will give you two hard drives in the T43. At 100 GB each, that totals 200 GB total capacity.

EDIT: That should read Ultrabay Slim (I always confuse this

Here is some more info on the 2010 error. You can stil use a hard drive even with this error. It is basically just an annoyance. Like I mentioned previously, some have successfully flashed the firmware of aftermarket drives. I am not sure which drives can be flashed, but some of the Hitachi's can I believe.

Someone at Drive Solutions said that some laps can't take the 160GB that I might be better off with a 120GB. Any truth to that?

Thanks! I just ordered 4 of the Hitachi drives from Newegg. Not a big fan of Hitachi but there weren't many choices.

Well, I plan to put 2 of the drives IN the laptop. I sure hope it works.
