14" sxga+ screen help needed

#1 Post by steveadore » Fri Mar 16, 2007 2:19 pm

I'm planning to buy a T60 with 14.1" SXGA LCD screen from Costcentral. I've been reading a lot about problems with Samsung screens, and I know that this particular model (2623KEU) may come with Samsung, BOE Hydis, or TMD LCD panels. Can anyone help me determine which of these three the laptop would have? Customer support at Costcentral cannot help me, and I would hate to order one with Samsung screens, which I would then have to ship back and ask for a replacement. Or are Samsung 14" screens not as bad after all? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have a Samsung screen, it looks fine to me. Not the best, but nothing wrong with it either.

You can determine the components if you have the serial number, but that is probably unavailable to you before you buy. The Samsung 14.1" screen is great and for many it is the 14.1" screen of choice.

I have the TDM screen. View angle are bad, the screen looks blueish. But it's pretty sharp.

Thanks to all of you. I've seen a couple of T60, and they all looked great, though I have no idea what LCD they had. Hmm, I'm glad at least Samsung is not that bad after all (I guess some people had an issue with them in the 15 WS version, compared to LGs). So, is TDM the worst of these then? I don't have illusions about the viewing angle, as I'm aware it's no flexiview. And does anyone have the Hydis screen to share opinions about it?

I tried to get the spec sheets for the screens, but in vain. I'll put it this way, I have an amazing 17" inch for normal use by samsung, and love good screen quality. On the T60, I was mildly disappointed at first by the mild leakage and colour of the TMD, but after some 6 months of using the laptop, I find it perfectly satisfactory. It gets the job done, and as long as you're looking at it head on, it's good enough for movies.

It really depends on personal preference, I thought I was peculiar about screen quality, but have no objections to it :)

I had the TDM SXGA+ , and was very disappointed. Viewing angles was "fair" in horizontal direction, but down right awful vertically to the point where it was around useless to me (Im a bit picky though). Everything had a slightly blue cast to it too. Contrast seemed a bit on the low side too. Enabling cleartype gave weird red "cast" to certain fonts (most notably in outlook 2003 where I had to change some of the default fonts).

We have TMD SXGA and the screen is actually quite good for any home work I have tried it for. It is way better than my high end HP nw8240.
