VMware Server on a T43

#1 Post by spikex34 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 4:16 am

I know this is a very specific configuration, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had issues geting sound and ethernet to work when the host machine is running Ubuntu and the Guest is Windows XP on a T4x thinkpad. My biggest concern is just getting networking to work. I've tried all four options (bridge, NAT, etc) to no avail. Any help or ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Also, how about a virtualization subforum? I can see apps like VMware getting more popular as time goes on.

You need to post some more details of what you are doing and seeing.

VMware NAT and Bridged networking works a treat with a Windows host. I have not heard that it doesn't work on a Linux host.

If you are using Bridged networking, then there must be an external DHCP server (external to the PC's) such as a router. If that is true, your guest machine should pick up an external IP.

If you are using NAT (in the guest) then you will get an internal IP (192.168.xxx.yyy). Try Edit -> Network Settings in VMware to see your network settings. Then, does the NAT'ed guest get an IP in the NAT range?

Make sure you have the kernel source package installed and also the development packages as well. This is because you'll need to build the bridging module for the OS during the VMWare Server installation (done by the installer's scripts).

Big edit: It's working now. I installed the source package and played around with the router config. Thank you everyone!
