XP Install
XP Install
Hi there,
I recently bought a second T22 off E-Bay. It came with a large hd and XP Pro installed, and the XP box, cd, booklet and SP2 cd, etc.
I formatted the hd and have put it into another T22 with W2k.
However, I would like to try XP. But I don't understand the legality of installing when I did not buy the os. Can I install it or will I have the MicroSoft Police knocking on my door?
Any mention of OEM's and COA's will leave me totally clueless!
Many thanks for and advice,
Rex

There is a sticky in the Windows OS forum that I wrote that should clear things up, You must have COA (either on the Windows XP box, or a COA on the machine) for you to legally install Windows on that machine. Now if you know that the install key is legit, and know one else knows it, you should be okay installing that copy of windows. From what you have said, you have a retail version of XP. As long as this copy is not installed on any other computer, you can install it on the T22.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Stargate,
I read the sticky but didn't really understand because of the OEM/COA language.
The T22 came with the W98/W2k holographic sticker on it but XP installed. As I said, I removed XP because I prefer the interface of W2k and I know my way around it. Anyway, W2k works for me.
The box does look like a retail version, complete with Certificate of Authenticity sticker and the cd pack inside has the product key. the cd has all the MS holograms and certainly looks genuine.
Whether XP from this disk is on another computer or not, I would have no idea, but it certainly is not on mine (yet.)
Are you saying that it should be hunky dory?
Rex

Purchase of a retail copy of Windows allows the purchaser to install the OS on any one machine at a time.
The license allows the purchaser to transfer the right to install on one machine to another end user as long as: 1) the initial user does not retain a copy of the software; 2) the transfer includes the "Proof of License" (or "COA") label. Unstated, but true, is 3) the initial user has to remove the software from use.
Since it sounds as though you got everything, including the original packing box, it appears that the right to install the OS was transferred to you. If that's the case, at this point, whether it's still on another machine isn't your problem. If it is on another machine, that machine is the one that's "pirating".
When the license is transferred in the circumstance you describe, you become the "user" who has the right to install and use the software.
