Thinking about buying a new T60

#1 Post by SaberX » Sat Mar 17, 2007 4:29 pm

I have about $2000.00 to spend on a new laptop.
I'm looking at getting a T60.
There is the T60 and T60p i'm looking at.
The T60 has a 128meg ATI X1400 video in it.
The T60p has 256meg Fire GL.

How much better is the 256meg Fire GL over the 128meg X1400?
Both are running a 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT.

Newer card, better performance but more battery consumption.

What do you plan on doing with it? Like ryengineer said, the FireGL is faster but consumes more batteries and runs hotter. If you don't need the graphics, then you can spend the extra money on more RAM or a bigger/faster HD.

Just for reference, my X1400 runs HL2, AOEIII, Rappelz, and F.E.A.R. on highest or near-highest graphics settings without a hitch.

If the 2 prices are about the same, i will advise you to go for the T60p. :-)

I recently faced this same choice. The price difference between the two was about $100; the T60p had the FireGL card (as opposed to the X1400), a 100 GB 7200 rpm drive (as opposed to a 120 GB 5400 rpm drive), and a nine-cell battery (the T60 had a sixer). The T60 also had a/b/g/n wireless, whereas the T60p had Intel a/b/g.

I made my decision primarily on the basis of the graphics card and the battery. I figured as far as graphics went, I'd rather have the card and not need it, than wish I had opted for it. (Plus I hear FS X is a real graphics hog.) And a nine-cell battery would be pretty expensive if I ever wanted to add one on, but this way I was sort of getting it for free. I'm sure the faster drive will be nice as well.

Well here in Canada the T60 with 120 gig 5400rpm,1 gig ram,6 cell bat,and x1400 vid. is $1649.00...
The T60p with the 256mb fire GL , 100gig 7200rpm,2 gigs ram,9 cell bat,3 yeay warrenty is $1999.00

I'm thinking for thease upgrades it will be well worth the higher price.
I plan on haveing this laptop for along time so i want a nice one to start with.

I'll be doing alot of video capture , making dvd movies from home VHS,photoshop, some games, just about everything a desktop would do.
I dont mind that it will eat up the bat abit more.I can always get a 2nd bay for the ultrabay.

I think i have made up my mind and going with the 1999.00 T60p.
cant wait to get my hands on it .
Thanks for all the help.
