Curious about the R series

#1 Post by Temetka » Sat Mar 17, 2007 8:33 pm

So I am looking at a new Thinkpad in a month or so. I currently have a T41 which is an excellent machine.

However I will be giving it to the wife. So new t-pad for me! A friend has and R51 with a 15" SXGA+ screen and it is very nice looking. We compared physical size and it didn't seem that much bigger than my current machine.

However I do not want to downgrade. So does a machine like this exist?

CoreDuo or Core2Duo
128MB or better GPU
DVD Burner
802.11g wifi
100GB + hard drive
Extended battery

Thanks.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.

Is there any reason that you wouldn't get a T60? I believe you can configure a R5x with the specs you are looking for at around $1300 - $1400.
W510 - 4318-CTO (15.6" FHD, i7-820, 8GB DD3, 500GB)
T60P - 8744-J2U (LG 15.4" WSXGA+, 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR2, 500GB 7200RPM, FireGL 256MB, Vista Business)
T60 - (15.4" - WSXGA - 2.0GHz, 2GB DDR2, 320GB)
R40 - 2681 (15" XGA, 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 40GB)

Due to monetary concerns. I can only allocate around $1500 to do this with.

Thanks for the response though.

R51 was last model having SXGA+ IPS (FlexView) screen which is top quality notebook screen ever. That's why it looked so good. Next models, R52 and R60 have average TN crap panel only. IBM/Lenovo is going to discontinue such perfect screens even for T series. See other threads about this issue.

Hmm. that T looks good. I don't care about fingerprint.

You guys got links to where you found / configured these units from?

I like the R that was listed, but I *NEED* to connect to domains and thus it's either XP Pro or Vista Business.

I have seen the display on a R60 and it is just ok - nothing to talk about. Specifications wise it is very close to a T60 - infact you can get identical specs as a T60 (except display). R60 is a great buy for the money you spend (it is about $400 less for an identically spec'ed T60). They are a bit bulky and not as thin and light as the T series, but are thinkpads nevertheless - very sturdily built.

That said, I really want to see a R51p (I think) which was designed to have a QXGA (!) display someday in person. The R51p has similar specs to the T4x series that you had. If you don't mind waiting a bit and don't need a dual core processor, you can get a nice R51p series laptop (ebay, our forum, ITX - you know) and replace the display to QXGA sometime. Just my $0.02
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

Go to usa.visa.com/personal, choose "Lenovo" --> "Redeem" --> "ThinkPad notebooks" --> "T Series" --> look for "8743GZU"

I recently bought an R60 (9461-DXG) and after a month of use, I'm still excited and discovering awesome features.
Today I found teh TuxRacer game, which is played by tilting the notebook (uses the HDD position detection), but overall it's great.
The main reasons I bought it were the 15" SXGA 1400*1050px (widescreens and larger than 15" just isn't my cup of coffee), the CD2 1,83Mhz processor and the 128MB+ Ati X1400 card (currently running at 512MB).
T60's were either not in my price range or lower specs.
Weird thing is the R60 came in a T-Series box. Guess they're pretty much twins.
It came with XP-Pro and is Vista capable.

If you don't mind my asking:

Where did you buy it from, and what was the sale price?

I'm shopping around right now. Still heavily considering the T series, simply because all of the previous Thinkpad's that I have owned have been from the T-series.

Thanks.

Bought it locally and the price was 1850USD (after conversion to the currently cheap dollar).
For comparison, a T60 (2007-FUG) with close specs sells at about 2530USD.
