Thinking about a Warranty Upgrade - Any Tips or Best Prices?

#1 Post by dmcgibbo » Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:33 pm

I got a T42p that came with a 1yr warranty and I'd like to upgrade (probably stick with depot/send-in service but change to 3yr). Any tips on where/how to get a warranty? I saw on Zones.com that you could purchase warranties I believe and they were cheaper than on the IBM site I think. So should I call IBM, do it online, go through Zones.com or somewhere else, or as an IBM employee through the EPP can you ge a better deal? I assume I have until my warranty expires to upgrade? Maybe I should wait til then?

There was a post here a while back about this - a link to IBM's site - anyone have it handy? Searched, can't find it.

Thanks, kj

i wonder why T42p's aren't listed on there? it looks like 30L9197E Warranty service upgrade; 3 year onsite repair 9x5/next business day
$119.00 is a good deal but i'd just want 3yr send it in repair b/c i don't want some idiot coming to repair my pc and using busted parts - i bet the people i send it to are better at fixing things and are more apt to just replace the parts

Don't be concerned about the T42p not being listed as qualified for an extended warranty, IBM is often remiss in updating the warranty pages with new models.

Just call IBM and tell them you want to update to the 3 year EZServ warranty for $132.

The correct webpage for your 2378 is: http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... 3&x=9&y=16

IBM Web Page Which Lists ALL Warranty Upgrades for ThinkPads

#8 Post by Peter_S » Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:17 am

http://www-918.ibm.com/SPL_MP.htm

For your particular model, 2378-DYU, the cost is $132 for 3 year, depot repair, with a part number of 30L9192. Simply navigate to the web site listed above, search for 30L9192 and you will see your various warranty upgrade options. Good luck!

I upgraded my 2378FVU model from 1 to 3 year depot repair (ie 30L9192).

The original page Yogesh posted above. Basically it's $110 per year added to your 3 year warranty for Depot (EZServ) service up to 5 years.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading a 2373 until it gets a bit longer in the tooth. You can upgrade at any time before the original warranty expires.

James

Clarification to JHEM's Posted Message

#10 Post by Peter_S » Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:56 am

The ONLY difference between the Web page I cited,
http://www-918.ibm.com/SPL_MP.htm

and Yogesh's site is the page I reference is a "super-set" of ALL ThinkPad warranty upgrades. That is, ALL warranty upgrades currently offered by IBM are listed.

Also, and this is why I think JHEM mentions Yogesh's web page, that page has the option of adding the warranty upgrade to your virtual cart. However, for some ThinkPad models, Yogesh's site is not applicable since only a small subset of models and warranty upgrades are listed.

Use the web page I reference to select the appropriate warranty upgrade, cost, and part number. The part number, along with your ThinkPad's serial number, can be used to upgrade your warranty simply by telephoning IBM customer support.

Peter, Thanks for posting the page with the full set of warranty upgrade options.

In the past when I have wanted to buy warranty upgrades, I have simply added the option that I wanted to my shopping cart and paid for it even if the machine type was not listed. In all case an IBM Sales rep has emailed me and processed the order. Saves the hassle of calling/being on the phone if you are moving around all the time as I do.

And James is correct in pointing out that IBM web pages for some of their offerings frequently contain dated information, especially on how the warranty upgrade is activated. The same can be said for their paper publications.

The last time I brought an upgrade (9/2004), I received a note from IBM directing me to go to a website: http://www-918.ibm.com/Verify_W.htm . The website asked me for the upgrade activation code that I would find printed on the cover of the warranty service upgrade contract sent to me by IBM. Of course, no such activation code came with the contract and after one phone call to the sales rep I learnt that the actual procedure was automated: IBM sales processed the order for upgrade and then their entitlements people updated their database to indicate that my machine's service had been upgraded with 1 year onsite service.

To make a long story short, give the sales dept a call and let them handle it.
