Removing the upper bezel on the t42 14"

#1 Post by Bgradid » Mon Mar 19, 2007 5:13 pm

I just got my t42 back from the repair depo due to a dead fan (happens :( ) and the repair technicial had failed to put the bezzel back in right , to the point where the lid wouldn't even close all the way. I sadly didn't notice until I got home.

I took it upon myself to fix it by myself instead of lose my laptop for a week, and with some struggling, succeeded. However, I wasn't able to remove the left side hook that's closest to you with the bezel.

The bezel i'm refering to is the one that is not the palm rest. , but the one on page 119 in the hardware maintenance manual

I don't know if its something the hardware technician said but the left hand side closest would not come up no matter what I did, and yes, of course the screw in that area was removed

The reason I want to remove the bezzel is so i can re-install the heatsink, the temperatures are much higher than my old one and I suspect the technician also failed to properly apply thermal compound.

I am assuming you removed the 3 screws - 2 in the back, next to the battery and one under the palmrest in the left front. You need to use something sharp, like a jeweler's screwdriver, to separate the lower case from the tab on the bezel that sticks down next to the case. You put the tip in about 3/4" back from the front screw and GENTLY lift the handle a little to separate the case from the tab. When you put the bezel back in, start by putting in the right corner above the VGA port. You don't actually need to remove the upper bezel to get the fan out, but you should get it in right so the lid closes correctly. There are 3 tabs in the back that the guy probably didn't get in. You can see them clearly with the lid open and the battery out.

Thanks I was considering using something to lever it up but I could only imagine that i'd end up breaking some plastic thing holding it there

However now the laptop is freezing constantly when both dimm's are installed, looks like i might need to get the motherboard replaced :?

If the main memory isn't installed all the way or makes poor contact, it will freeze up. You should try it with only the main memory module in and try a different memory chip if you can. I am working on a machine where the main memory socket is shot and makes poor contact. I just got a replacment socket and will try to solder it in tomorrow. (probably unsuccessfully)

This is how it works so far from my testing:

Both sticks installed: will freeze quite often, sometimes even at the post-power on system password before it gets to windows, but, if left to simply run in memtest86 its fine

Only one stick installed in the bottom slot(doesn't matter which stick, I've tried both ) -- System works fine no matter what I do.

Strangely enough, flashing the bios to the newest seems to have relieved all problems

I think you will find it is not stable and the main memory slot is bad.

Don't take this the wrong way but I hope you're wrong :D, but everything would agree that it was a bad memory slot except for the memtest86 results

However the machine has been pretty stable for a while now, a few hours longer than it was ever stable before.

I hope you're right. It is also possible that reseating the memory was enough to get rid of a little piece of jung in there in the way of good contact.
