Using Outlook with Public Wifi - Can Receive, but Not Send?

Coffee shop WIFI connection...

I can receive outlook emails, but not send. I have seen this at some wifi spots and not an issue with others. Spoke to another TP user(older A31) says he has no problems sending email in outlook from same spot.

I have looked thru all of the security profiles, encryptions to see if I could see any obvious issues, but not really sure what I am looking for.

Tried turning off both XP and Norton firewalls, setting a different port(80 vs 25)...I was thinking the encyption handshake was an issue as it ws between my Lenovo n card and home router. But for public wifi is the defualt is no security.

Out of ideas?

Some ISP's will not allow you to send mail when connected to a different ISP.
Personally if I was at a coffee shop or any public wireless I would ssh or vpn to home or work. Then you would be able to work just like you were at home or work and be secure at the same time.

Your ISP has to offer an authenticated SMTP server. This requires you to enter your password when you send a message. The password is required only for the first message sent. It should be remembered until you close Outlook.

Personally I use Earthlink. Now I always use Earthlink's authenticated SMTP server: smtpauth.earthlink.net. In the past I used to use: smtp.earthlink.net from home. Now it appears Earthlink is using authenticated smtp servers throughout. See link below for a little more infrormation on this.

You need to check with your ISP to see if they offer an authenticated smtp server that you can use. Alternatively use webmail (where you send your email from a webpage rather than from Outlook) or else use a VPN as carbon_unit suggested. I have not personally tried the VPN route, so I am unfamiliar with how to set that up.

See if your ISP offers a remote SMTP connection. My main ISP does, and that remote SMTP works in most places. ... JD Hurst

I did search comcast's website for smtp remote server, but found nothing specific to "remote server".

Just the usual how to config outlook email. They did, however, list 587 as the port for outbound smtp server. I had always used port 25 which I think is default.

I reviewed earthlinks link above and made the change to my config by adding port 587 for outbound and setting up outbound requires authenication.

I'll try it tommorrow.

I am not getting those kinds of errors and my connection at home via netgear router works fine. Its just certain public wifi routers...

I am hoping the port change I did above resolves the issue as this one coffee shop is my main go to for browsing(I mean off site work )

You may need to set the parameters for your SMTP server (outgoing mail settings) to accept a login ID and password. On may systems, this allows you to send mail when you are not on your ISP's system. This the the "outgoign server requires authentication" settings. Your ISP should know what that means and give you any settings needed. It will include your ID and password for incoming mail, but in Outlook, you need to put it in two places (incoming and outgoing).
