So I have my old 80GB Thinkpad HDD in an unpowered external enclosure (powered by USB) and when I plug it in to my Thinkpad it works fine (on a USB 2.0 card), it gets recognized and I can do what I want with it. But when I plug it in to my desktop (custom built) it makes a faint beeping sound and every second or so it clicks (parking the heads?). Windows recognizes it as an external HDD ("disk drive") but chugs around for a while then tells me an error has occured and the harware won't work properly. It does this on every USB port on the desktop (made in 05). Is the desktop hardware incompatible? Should I get a dedicated USB 2.0 PCI card? Any help's appreciated! Thanks!
