Extra hdd for X40 - what will work?

#1 Post by danny_w » Wed Mar 21, 2007 9:16 am

I have an X40 w/XP and I love it, but would like an extra hdd so that I could easily change them out and have a different os on each one without having to partition. I know the options are quire limited, but what is special about the X40/X41 1.8" drives? Is the connector different, the height, or what? I only need a small hdd, no more than 10GB, but anything will do. Thanks for your help.

Also, as an alternative, will the X40 boot from a USB device? Particularly a thumb drive? If so I could go that route.

Hitachi C4K40 or C4K60 series with IDE connector will work. The ones with ZIF connector will not work.

X40 can boot from a USB hard drive. IMO that's probably the easiest option.

divide the partition into 2 in a hard drive may be an option for you but you prob not trying to do that

but the travelstar 20gb 1.8" is the only known hds that works.

You can try dual boot xp or linux, but vista/xp may take some work
Yes, I might try that. I have a 40GB hdd, and an XP restore CD on the way from IBM. Do you know how large the hidden partition is that it creates? Mine doesn't currently have the hidden partition. If there is enough space left I could do a dual boot Win98/WinXP (my wife needs Win98 for a few things) and maybe Linux.
