error #1828: Free space is too small

#1 Post by toozie21 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 10:57 am

I have an old T40 laptop that I was trying to install an OS on, but I just can't seem to get anything to work. When I try to use the restore CDs I have, I go through all the prompts and acknowledge that I want to format, then it throws an "error #1828: Free space is too small". I even tried a version of linux I know works on them it it hangs during the formatting portion everytime.

Does anyone know what is wrong? I have swapped drives and am having the same problem with the new drive (sounds like a hardware problem, but I am just not sure).

If you are at square one with the Format command and it won't, either:
(1) You need to first use Fdisk to remove all partitions, or
(2) The hard drive has an error.

I've also had good luck using PC Doctor to do a full erase of the drive - that followed by a format usually fixes this type of problem.

I believe egibbs offers good advice. As the user in the following thread discovered, "fdisk was too weak".

The Hitachi Drive Feature Tool will do it too. There is a setting in there to set the maximum size of the disk.
T60 2623-D7U, 3 GB Ram.
Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.
