T30 SMBIOS Error Code 31

#1 Post by pengang » Wed Mar 21, 2007 12:52 pm

I just joined this board recently and have enjoyed and benefited from discussions on various threads, such as the T30 memory module issue and how to fix it.

Recently, I bought a 802.11g wireless mini-PCI card from eBay and installed it on my T30. The card isn't one of the IBM approved models, but it works. Drivers were provided to update the BIOS and I did not see nay "no-1802" problem that has been discussed on this forum.

It works except for the following:

1) IBM Access Connection v4.23 identifies the card as Wireless LAN, but doesn't provide the configuration panels such as Connection Type (Infrastructure, etc), Wireless Mode (auto, etc), Wireless Security Type , etc to complete my location profiles. Hence, I cannot use Access Connection with the card.

2) Upon investigating further, I notice that in my hardware device driver (Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware), there is an exclamation sign on something called SM BIOS service. It claims device confilct and error code 31.

The T30 boots up fine. I am able to launch my wireless connection w/o using Access Connection. However, being a "perfectionist", I would like to resolve the error code 31 problem as well as figure out how to get Access Connection to use the wireless card that is installed in the machine.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

try to install the motherboard driver from IBM or Intel or the chipset driver [they are one and the same thing] and this should make the laptop run faster and a little longer battery life and make the yellow sign go away.

good luck!

someone over in the german thinkpad forum encountered the same issue recently. even though i do not think he could solve it, we found out it's a driver needed only for certain sysinfo applications and not really necessary. it gives information about your system to certain programs.

as to your wlan card, you will not be able to get fn+f5 capabilities unless you manage to install an ibm driver (afaik)

I have "uninstalled" the hardware identified as SM BIOS, rebooted the laptop and there appears to be no detrimental effect.

My 802.11g WLAN mini-PCI card works, but since it is not an official IBM approved card, the Access Connection can't configure it, and Fcn F5 does not turn the wiresless radio on/off. If anyone has suggestion to resolve this part, please let me know.

Thanks again.

you can disactivate it using windows. in the network adapters settings dialogue. not as convenient, works as well though.

Yes, I know that - just not as convenient.
