CD-ROM ?
Hello.
I have an i Series 1300 ( still heavily used ) on which the CD will not read anymore. Well, it does read but only to say that any CD in it is a music CD then quits. A data CD will not show anything. I replaced the device with 4 other ones, tested all good in another Thinkpad and still that i Series 1300 will not joyfully use any CD.
I checked the BIOS and it shows no CD control option safe for the booting sequence. The BIOS was updated. The CD device starts up then quits after a short spell, maybe one minute (???).
Has anybody seen this before and if it was fixed, how was it fixed ? To load an OS, I took the HD out and via an USB port on another system, copied the whole Me disk to it and then ran it from the HD, hey, it runs !
Have a great Thinkpad day. JP.

RE:CD won't read
I have a feeling how you installed windows may be half the problem, but then again I ran and backed up 98 on this (my t30) from the hard drive from my father's i1300. A few things that you should try:
Firmware upgrades:
Do you have the lastest bios and cd-rom firmware upgrades from lenovo?
Drivers:
Check to make sure your drivers are the most recent ones available. If they aren't, update them. If they are, reinstall them anyway.
Boot:
By the way you installed windows I'm gonna guess you were unable to boot from the CD? if you were, it rules out drivers and must be a hardware (motherboard) or firmware issue.

Dead CD.
Truk in Oldtown, greetings.
Thanks for trying to help me. All that you mentioned do not apply to my sad case. The i Series 1300 ran beautifully, then the CD quit. It was not during an install, it was during normal use and I needed to use the CD but it was dead.
The BIOS is up to date. The drivers have been redone when I copied the Win Me CD onto the HD and ran the install from it. It ran it before, why not anymore. This is the question I would like replied. Maybe something let go on the planar.
You know, I should try another HD with W2K on it or Win98SE for that matter. I know that the CD device is good, I tried it in another Thinkpad along with 4 spares that behave the very same way in this Thinkpad and others.
Thanks for your time. .JP.

Maybe by swapping out CD drives too often, you may have bent or broken one of the internal contacts. If you can get at it relatively easy, do a visual.
Is this one of those universal slots that also takes floppies or extra HDs? If so, try a different type of drive.

W2K is a good idea, anything but Windows ME, poor OS in my opinion.jparrot427 wrote:

Not really fully dead CD.
I spent a few minutes (?) last evening on this i Series 1300 and its CD device. Observations : if I get an ERD floppy to load and ask for DOS to be installed with CD recognition, it says : No CD device found, this in DOS now.
If I run Me, and insert a music CD, it will start it, play 10 seconds of music then stops and again, if I load a data CD it says that it can not play that music CD (???).
So what conclusion can we draw here, it seems to me that the device is fine, I tried it in another i Series, the driver can not even see it in DOS, that OAKCDROM.exe works on all my other attemps with any ERD floppy. Where is the stump ?
I now think that there is a fault on the MoBo, I will have to live with this then as a new planar costwise, is out of the question for a 4 year old Thinkpad.
Thanks one and all. .JP.

ME is a cripple of an OS, to put it mildly.
Go into Device Manager and UNinstall anything you can find for a CD/DVD.
Then reboot (with the CD-drive inserted) and see if ME re-installs it. (it should)
You might get lucky.

This was done so many times, I forget. I am leaning towards a planar defect in a circuit somewhere. Everything else, within reach, is good.
Thanks for your attention. JP.

RE:CD rom
If you can't use it in the BIOS, it rules out the OS being the issue.
Congratulations, you are now the owner of an 1300 with a fried mobo. Welcome to the club. They are hard to kill, and often it's the owner that kills them (thats why my fathers battery no longer works). Maybe it was just it's time. Have you checked on ebay? You can sometimes get older equipment like that for pretty cheap.

CD gonzoed !
Hello Truk.
You typed at me thus :
Congratulations, you are now the owner of an 1300 with a fried mobo.
I think that the MoBo is fine, the CD will play for 10 seconds. I have a feeling that some IC on it heats up and disconnect. I was trying this forum, hoping that somebody would know enough to tell me where to look. The fact that even in BIOS, the CD is not "seen" really points to the MoBo or something on it.
That i Series 1300 is working fine otherwise. Thanks to the USB ports, it can be worked on.
Have a large day. JP.
