>>> OLPC - 1 laptop per child <<<

#1 Post by spt60 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 3:12 pm

I've heard (or read) somewhere that to buy 1 of the $100 laptop, you will pay $200 to get 1 for yourself and 1 to donate for the kids. Now where do I go to to do this? Anyone knows?

This site is the official one (http://www.laptop.org), in which there's a link for donation. Not sure if it's the one where you can buy one as mentioned above.

Thanks! 8)

hm, i'd heard that these would only be available via government purchases in the targeted countries (or at least those that signed the initial contracts).

Actually it was $400 for the Give1Get1 program. I think its over for now in the US and Canada. $200 is tax-deductuble for the laptop given. You also got T-Mobile hotspot for 1 year. Anyhow, $100 laptop wound up costing more like $175 to build.

You can also find them on eBay. Do a search on XO and/or OLPC. The ones on eBay may or may not come with TMobile Hotspot.

I have one from the Give1Get1 program. I haven't decided whether to keep or sell it. My son is a bit young for it but I might do some development for it since I am no longer working as a software engineer but staying home to raise my son for a few years.

Looks like the give1get1 ended December 31, 2007.

No plans in place for future offers, based on the FAQ from the OLPC website. Naturally, you can donate to send a laptop anytime.

I also saw that the G1G1 laptops were NOT the same as the ones sent abroad. The one the donor would receive had no alternative sources of power such as crank, solar panel, ect. It relied exclusively on the AC adapter.

The OLPC XO laptop has some interesting specs. Particularly the 1200x900 resolution display.

I haven't quite figured out the specs that say 800*600 in color mode. A 1024x768 application (GCompris) doesn't fill the screen. Also Doom needs to be set to 1200x900 to fill the display. So it seems to be 1200x900 in color mode too.
