CD/DVD-ROM driver issue

#1 Post by murray1 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 4:39 pm

I recently removed my cd-rom because I was also provided with another dvd-rom with my computer. Now my cd-rom doesn't work since I put it back in. My computer recognizes that the ROM is there but under the device manager I get the error below.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

It is a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC4242N if that helps.

Microsoft has a page about this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

And I believe that a member here had this same problem within the last few months and this fix worked. Or one like it... Here's the thread I just found:

Ok, now I think I have a bigger problem. I deleted the registry entries like it said and everything seemed to work perfectly. I rebooted and then put a cd in and it worked.

My problem is that when I stop the cd from working my cd-rom continues to stay on full speed. If I open the cd-rom to stop it then I get a warning saying there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D:.

I also ran SFC /scannow as somebody had advised Purcy to and it constantly says Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. And to insert my Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now.

I do not have a CD for windows xp professional though. My father and friend who fixes computers for a living built this computer for me and installed all of this stuff on it, he may have the cd but im not sure.

Is there any way to solve this without the CD.

Sorry, I'm stumped! Can anybody else jump in and offer some help?

Ok, I found a little bit more stuff, one thing im thinking might be a little bit fishy, maybe it is the problem.

First of all I found a website that talks about SFC /scannow and what usually causes these errors and such. It is
http://www.compphix.com/windowsfileprotection.html

Pretty much at the end it says How to put I386 on your root drive. First it says to use your cd to place I386 where you want then it says to look in registry and change sourcepath to this folder.

Just for interest sake I looked to see where it is set to. This is what it said.
C:\Documents and Settings\Sunset 510\Local Settings\Temp\HP OfficeJet\AddPrint\English\2000
A folder that doesn't even exist, I get all the way to temp then there is no HP, a reason for this folder existing at some point would be that I tried to install our home printer stuff on my computer but there was something wrong with the printer so I deleted everything for it.

Does anyone know if changing this sourcepath to C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache would help solve anything possibly. This is the folder that the above website says contains these dll files that my computer needs.

I am thinking that this shouldn't hurt anything considering that the folder above doesn't even exist in the first place. I do not know all that much about this stuff though so I am not sure.

Also if the dllcache folder were corrupted, what most likely caused this to happen?

Ok, think I might possibly be good but am not sure. I didn't do much but I did notice that I already had I386 folder on my computer, so I went into the registry and changed the source path to that folder.

I rebooted and ran SFC /scannow, still got a ton of errors but I though what the heck I'll try a cd again. I put a cd in and then shut down the install screen and this time the CD-ROM didn't remain on full throttle and when I opened it I did not get an error.

So it seems like my CD-ROM problem is fixed, now I'm wondering how big of a problem is SFC /scannow not running properly. Is it imperative that I get a hold of my XP cd and fix these issues?
