Help!

#1 Post by hopesfall » Sun Sep 26, 2004 12:56 pm

Hi, i am looking into purchasing a ibm thinkpad (most likely a t series) and would like to use it in conjunction with programs such as netstumbler, kismet and knoppix. Knoppix and kismet do not support centrino technology, so here in lies my question. How do i turn off the centrino wireless on the t40 so i can use a orinoco classic gold pcmcia card? I will only be using the centrino wireless for basic websurfing, the orinoco for everything else. Also how do i set up a wireless card profile so the ssid is ANY or blank? One more thing the pcmcia type card is what i need correct? Thanks in advance!!!

I just tried it out and as far as using a PCMCIA orinoco card when I sick it into my thinkpad I get 2 wireless icons in my system tray. I assume you could just disable the intel card (or turn it off) if you didn't want to try to have it connect. I am not sure if access connections will manage the orinoco card for you or not, but I bet you can find a way to have it connect to any open AP it finds.

2 choices:

1) Buy a "Centrino" TP and use option in BIOS to turn off card.

2) Buy a Non-"Centrino" thinkpad and use the built-in Wi-fi (for instance IBM a/b/g)

Doesn't knoppix support centrino since version 3.4??!
they say so on the site...they included the ipw2100 drivers on it.

Oh maybe..but still kismet doesnt support centrino, and netstumbler works better with a card such as the orinoco classic gold as far as i cant tell.... Also isnt the f1 thing onlt for the t 21/t22/t23 etc? I thought it was access ibm for the t40 etc...oh what do i know lol thats why im asking you guys. Also turning of the wireless through the bios wont turn off the pcmcia card when i put it in after correct? Like the classic gold card will work but the intel centrino wont right?
One more thing, if i bought a t23 instead i can use the pcmcia classic gold card without any modification right? Just pop it in and use it?

I said F1 'cos F1 takes you directly to the BIOS...

Disabling "Internal Wifi Card" in BIOS will only disable internal wifi card - will not affect PCMCIA devices.

T23 should be fine.
