Love my X60 tablet with sxga+ screen, but finding that I'm not using it in tablet mode that much. Are there any rumors of the non-tablet X60/X60s notebooks having an sxga+ option in the near future?

If they DO, I'll have to sell the one I just bought and replace it. As much as I am looking forward to the portability of my new X60s, XGA/1024x768 does not do it for me.

Nope. Instead, Lenovo is planning to discontinue most if not all 4:3 screens and switch to widescreen Thinkpads instead. So, I think it's unlikely they will offer SXGA+ in future non-tablet X-series models.

actually i don't really see the reason for wide screen only thing i can fathom is for watching widescreen movies. In terms of desktop realestate i don't really need that extra space really cause i keep the desktop tidy. Or i could download one of the microsoft power toys that gives me extra desktops. I don't really see the point in squeezing my eyes for see an even smaller font. Can someone pls enlighten me on the advantages of widescreen?

I'm sorry but the more pixels per given area is not a valid argument as you can have a non-widescreen 12.1" display with SXGA+ and more pixels per unit area than the 1280x800 12.1" widescreen display.


Widescreen IMHO is just not useful in a small screen (it's great on my 24" monitor). I would hate to have to squint to read anything, and if I zoom in on a page then we are at square one in terms of how much of a document page I can read without scrolling.


There is a reason why documents are printed on paper in the "portrait" format and that is because it is much easier for the eyes to not have to keep moving left and right. Your eyes would much rather move up and down slightly than left and right.


In the case of films, the rationale for widescreen format is because it fills your peripheral vision better and is more immersive. You can only really focus on one spot at a time though. So no real action ever goes on in those side areas it just to make it more immersive. It might be good for movies, but I'd rather use my 24" monitor or my projector for that. My laptop is for getting work done.

The move to widescreen is definitely driven by economic factors where they can cut more individual screens from the large glass substrate if they cut in the 16:10 ratio. It is cheaper to make widescreen displays, and that's why you see them so much these days, it wasn't done to please the customer.

IMHO at 12.1" widescreen for most uses is just horrible. Maybe when you get to 20-24" you can afford the loss of the vertical dimension.

do you have any [speculative] info on the next screens to be offered in tablets? X61 and beyond? i'm wanting to replace my X41T with a multitouch unit, but i'm willing to hold out if it gets a better config than a dim screen with XGA.

X61 Tablet screens are going to be the same as the X60 tablet offerings, so you will have XGA, XGA w/multitouch, and SXGA+. No SXGA+ w/multitouch yet.

Also, no reference to 12W in the X Series ThinkPad line for now, so 4:3 lovers, take heart.

I disagree. I'm looking for a WXGA screen for a X-series, similar to the form of the widescreen D420 from Dell, except with a 2.5inch 5400rpm hard drive. Would also like 128MB of video memory and a descrete graphics chip for Aero.

I need a bit more pixels than XGA in a 12 inch screen. I'd even take WSXGA or SXGA+, since either would give me about 1440 pixels across.

I'm looking for something to run Vista on for the next 4 years or so. This is to replace my 4.5 year old Gateway 200 (which is/was an XP workhorse). My T43 will continue to be my "server" (via VMware) and I'll use the X6x as my "workstation" and toy.

I preactivation copy of Vista is a bt nicer than an MSDN copy since I can get it up and running a few minutes sooner. Plus it's nice to have some separation of duties in a lab environment.

Plus it's more fun with two computers (and VMware helps to ensure I won't need more than that). YMMV.

But I welcome our >XGA overlords, even if it means widescreen. One nice thing about widescreen is a fullsized keyboard can be used.

In another thread, someone claimed that a Lenovo employee had told him that there would DEFINITELY not be a widescreen X series. I don't know why different Lenovo employees say different things. We'll find out who's right in a few months I guess.

Another thing is, I read somewhere that Lenovo has been having a hard time getting 12.1" SXGA+ displays for the X60 tablet. So, if the X series will indeed continue to use 4:3 screens, it's unlikely that SXGA+ will be an option; we will be stuck with XGA.

Your screen has an added bonus (other than the resolution), of being IPS - wide-view-angle and better colors than the regular screen. Even if higher-res screens would be available for future X-non-tablet models, they will probably not be as good. I'd definitely keep the tablet, even if you barely use the feature. Its only disadvantage is higher weight, compared to the X60, and mostly X60s.
