Please look at the on-site service I received today

#1 Post by arthurcorell » Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:17 pm

This afternoon, I received an on-site service to replace my motherboard on my Laptop(2623-D7U). It's terrible !
Example:
1. Did not write the model number and serial into the BIOS. So I can't use Website or "System Update" to get the updates.
2. By running "Intel Thermal Analysis Tools" at full load, I noticed that the temperature different between 2 cores (T2500) is 10 degree C !
3. The both clip on the palmreet are broken.
...

After I talked to the rep, I openned the plamrest and keyboard and took some pictures. Since I can't post picture here, I can tell you one of the problem:
On the top of the heatsink, there are 3 wires (grey, black and red) just hang on there over the FAN.

I have been told I can send my machine to their lab to get examined. But I asked for a replacement laptop for temperory use(I don't care to pay for lease or rent for the period). I had been told NO unless I'm IBM employee.

I'd look but there is not picture.

You can always file a complaint with the BBB if you feel that you did not receive the level of service you felt your warranty entitled to you.

Log another service call to have these problems fixed on site. Specifically tell them you do not want the same tech. Be sure to tell the new tech what happened and watch him do the repairs.

That sucks. If you want to fix it yourself (you'll do a better job than the last guy):

1.) download and install the latest BIOS update and it will give you the option to write the SN to your BIOS.

2.) this is completely normal and based on the processes you are running. Nothing to worry about here.

3.) call IBM-SERV and ask them to send you a new palmrest. It's a CRUable item and should arrive in a day or two. You won't have to return your current palmrest -- just throw it away.

On the issue of the antenna wires in your fan - this happens during field repairs *and* depot repairs :( . Since you see the wires, see if you can locate the clip that is meant to hold them out of the way of the CPU fan. You may have to disconnect them from your WLAN, WWAN and BT cards first -- label them so that they get back to the right cards.

BTW: I think the black wire is supposed to come from the right side, but perhaps that's just in the 15" model. It may also be the WWAN wire -- I've not worked with one of those.

Good luck!
