missing disk space
missing disk space
Hi all,
The C: partition on my HD is 44GB. If I add up the size of all the folders the total is 10.5GB. But disk properties shows that I only have about 700MB free space. System restore couldn't account for so much and I have no idea where else to look for the missing space.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Missing Disk Space
I have the same problem, and may have found the cause in c:\RRUbackup. This folder has twenty highly fragmented files of 48 megs each. Defragmenter cannot defragment these files, nor can I delete them, because we are denied access to that folder.
If you have the same situation and find a way to delete those files, please let me know.
Thanks.

Another thing is, if you're using Win XP, you need to go to "Tools" --> "Folder Options" --> "View" --> check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
You will now see more files and folders. Add them their sizes again and the total should now be more than 10.5GB.

OK - after a day and a half, including trying the analyse the C partition with Sequoiaview, then DOS diagnostics with Ultimate Boot CD, trying to remove enough to be able to run a defrag, finally it was simple. All those supposedly fragmented files are one of the RR backups. And no, viewing hidden files and folders doesn't display any of that stuff.
I just deleted one of the backups and retrieved 25MB of space. The fragments that remained displayed after the defrag are gone. Use the blue button - Access or Thinkvantage depending on model.
I think that taking up so much internal HD space for files that won't be any use if the drive can't be accessed is a bit pointless. Better to use an external drive IMHO.
Now I have loads of space again and can load the Lotus stuff that came as a free license but had to be got from Hungary!

Using the TV Rescue and Recovery you should be able to choose which backups to delete. You can also turn it off if if you don't need the backups (or if you manually do your backups to an external drive for instance.)

I need to remove useless, fragmented files from the c:\RRUbackup folder. I cannot gain access to the folder. Deleting restore files does not delete these files. They are not recognized by "My Computer", which says the folder has 0 bytes. I cannot change the attributes.
Defragmenter cannot defragment these files, but lists them as files it could not defragment. That is the only way I know they are there. They occupy at least one gig, but probably more because they are so highly fragmented.
Is there any program or procedure that will allow me to delete these files other than wiping out the whole C drive and starting over?

Your problem sounds identical to mine with the same size files undefragmentable, although in my case I was missing a much larger amount of space. Using the R & R tools, Create and View Backups, did you get to where you "List Backups"? Were you not able to delete one of them? That is what worked for me and I've since set other preferences to backup elsewhere.

I'm also hoping to clean out old backups, but can't figure out how to do it. I have an R51 which is about a year and a half old. I'm not sure if I have the correct level of Access IBM software installed, but the terminology seems a bit different.
I click on Protect & Recover / Define and Create Backups and am presented with a screen called IBM Rapid Restore Ultra which just has information. I can click on the dropdown under Backup and get 4 choices but none seems to give me a list of backups I can delete.
What am I missing? Where do I find Create & View Backups and List Backups? If I am behind in software, how can I get the correct one to install. I ran the update under downloads & drivers which installed System Update 3.0
By the way whenever I try to run a backup it fails, so there is clearly something else wrong in this area.

On my TP the backup and recovery stuff is done with Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery3, so there is different terminology. It seems to give a load of easy to use tools and options. Maybe someone else knows if there is any advantage (or even a possibility) to load and replace the earlier tools.
