New Z61t - LCD frame slightly bent
New Z61t - LCD frame slightly bent
I didn't see this at first, but when a friend of mine looked down onto the keyboard standing behind the laptop, he pointed out to me that the LCD bezel was coming off by about half a millimeter, right where those little indicator lights are. Some sticky goo was visible between gap. Now I pushed it back and it's flush with the metal frame of the panel, but I do see that that frame itself is slightly bent outward, so the bezel is under some mechanical stress and is likely to detach itself again. Is this something I shouldn't worry about or should I have Lenovo reassemble the screen properly, or even take the risk of getting an exchange which might result in other, more severe problems? What would you guys recommend me doing?

Thank you for your response. I'm just a little worried about what the screen will be like when I get it back from repair, since the one I currently have has no dead pixels and looks pretty good (not great, through). In the meantime, I have taken a picture:

Yes i have it too in Z61m. There is some part of the below bezel that slightly bent. But I saw my friend's Z and T and they have it too.
I think that bend only visible in a very steep angle. So as long as it did not disturb you and you already got perfect screen, i dont think it worth the trouble bringing to service center.
And remember, there is another risk involved if something happened with your screen at SC.

It's true, you don't see it if you don't look at the screen from above, but I'm not so much worried about the looks. I'm more concerned about particles creeping through the gap and eventually ending up being visible on the screen. Is that not something to worry about? I was hoping to use this laptop for years to come and I didn't pay this much money to be left with sub-par quality.sapibobo wrote:Yes i have it too in Z61m. I own a Z61p, which I know isn't exactly the same. But, I do not have a bend in the LCD casing like that. The fact that you can see sticky goo doesn't seem right. If I were you, and you can deal the hassels of replacement, I would get it replaced. At worst you end up with a with another one with the same problem.ikarus wrote: It's true, you don't see it if you don't look at the screen from above, but I'm not so much worried about the looks. Not going to say it is 100%, but my guess is that there is a retaining clip or something that is part of the bezel that isn't clipped into the display assembly.
I honestly probably wouldn't mess w/a repair call, but if it bothers you, by all means, call it in. You might try looking at the HMM
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 846_01.pdf
It looks like there is a clip assembly of some sort right about in that place. (Page 106-107 of 178, LCD Front Bezel) It doesn't look like you can "work" it back into place without removal of the bezel. I would either probably leave it, or if you are feeling industrious, undertake the fix yourself.
Good luck!

I'm looking into this right now. The problem I'm facing is that I got two rebates, one from AMEX and one from Fatwallet, totalling 18.5% on this notebook that I won't be able to get for the replacement, since the AMEX tailormade program on Lenovo purchases has expired and Fatwallet requires clicking through their site for placing the order.dsalyers wrote:Sales should allow you to purchase a new one and return the old one, waving the restocking fee. This is a pretty standard thing for them to offer.
Well, you still have a couple of options. I don't know how effective they will be because you didn't order from Lenovo directly. But here is what I did.ikarus wrote: I'm looking into this right now. When I received my first Z61p It had a flaw in the LCD (not dead or stuck pixels). I wanted it replaced. When I talked to sales, they said I could ship it in for repair (I didn't want to do this as they had taken over two months to get me the original laptop -- I could not afford another two weeks with out). So they gave me the second option which was I could purchase a new one and they would allow me to return the old one with out penalty when I received the new one.
I would have taken this except that when I bought my laptop it was $250 cheaper then what they were currently selling it for. I asked if they could lower the price on the new order such that I wouldn't be out any additional money. I was offered a $100 discount, but that was the most they said they could do.
I asked about cross-shipping the laptops, where they won't charge my CC unless I fail to return the old one withing X days of the receipt of the new. I was told they did not have the ability to do this.
However, I decided to give customer service a call (I had a representative related to the fact that it took so long to ship the original laptop). I told her my issue, and she immediately gave me the option of cross shipping. I just had to fax in a form with my credit card number saying that if I didn't send my old laptop back within 20 days of receipt of the new one I had to pay for the new one.
I asked why sales didn't offer me this, and I was told that what sales is allowed to do and what customer service is allowed to do are two different things.
Overall, I would say you need to get in contact with a customer service (not sales) representative and get them to allow you an advanced replacement, where you only pay for the new one if you don't return the old one.
Hope this helps.
Hey, that's great info, thanks! I did buy directly from Lenovo, so everything you did applies. I'm just having a hard time finding the customer service contact info on their site.dsalyers wrote: Well, you still have a couple of options. Yeah, I had the same issue. I got to the customer rep, when my sales rep couldn't figure out why my order was so delayed. So, you might just give them (sales) a call and insist that you need to talk to a customer service rep. I don't know how easily they will do that though. If I had a general number I would give it to you, but I don't.ikarus wrote:Hey, that's great info, thanks! I did buy directly from Lenovo, so everything you did applies. I don't know where exactly I got routed this time, but the person on the phone put me on hold for asking a "technician" and came back with the information that cross-shipping is only done for IBM employees. Not that I believe this is actually true, but it just seems impossible to get to someone competent and in charge to make decisions like that. This is really frustrating.dsalyers wrote: Yeah, I had the same issue. I got to the customer rep, when my sales rep couldn't figure out why my order was so delayed.
