Ultrabay HDD Giving me Problems (Drivers)...
Ultrabay HDD Giving me Problems (Drivers)...
Everytime I reboot my computer my 2nd HDD Drive (Toshiba MK4026GAX 40GB) gives me the "cannot install drive" error and under Device Manager I have an exclamation point with the following error:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
Where would I get drivers for this? They're not on Toshiba's site.
Any ideas or possible resolutions? Thanks...

I'm just curious, has this problem occur to you in recent days or ever since the purchase of the 2nd HDD Adapter. Maybe you bought a cheap (non original) adapter.

I'm a little bit unclear on what you are trying to do. To my knowledge, ultrabay devices are NOT hot swappable. By this I mean, the device must be in the ultrabay when you boot up the laptop and if you try to put it in later, when the laptop is running, it is not going to work properly. I've tried this a few times myself thinking that I could use them as hotswappable but found that they were not and would not work (do not recall if I received any error messages, just the device was not recognized and would not work).
So, if this is the problem you are having it is because you are trying to get the ultrabay to do things it was not designed to do. It is not a USB device, it is in essence an IDE type device.

Indeed, the ultrabay is hot swappable, only exception comes:carbon_unit wrote:I'm pretty sure the Ultrabay is hot swappable.
1. Using older Thinkpads (I had to turn off my A22e if I wanted to switched from CD-ROM/Floppy/2nd HDD Adapter), but the same Ultrabay devices were hot swappable on my T30 without powering off the machine.
2. If the HDD you're inserting on the Ultrabay have a password (boot password), you would need to turn OFF the laptop and then supply the password.
In other case, you should return the defective piece to Lenovo, I have a Ultrabay 2000 & Ultrabay Slim 2nd HDD Adapters and Windows never prompts me to install a driver for those devices

Ultrabay drives are definitely hotswap capable. I've been swapping for about 6 years with this and other ThinkPads without problems, you must however always use the remove hardware option in the task bar.
I usually have a MK8025GAS in the bay and swap it for the DVD burner or other hard drives.
The driver currently installed for the above hard drive at the moment is "disk.sys" located in XP under C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers.
Could it be that in "driver signatures" it's set to block the installation of drivers which do not posess a "windows signature" ?

I had problems, twice, swapping out an ultrabay battery and putting in a drive and it was not recognized under XP. I also had problems with Norton Ghost2003, however, of course, that is not a Windows problem and must be due to missing drivers.
I think it is possible that some situations work (e.g. are hot swappable) and some are not.
