TP HDD Active Protection problem

#1 Post by CyberDude » Sun Mar 25, 2007 8:40 am

I suddenly got a message saying the the HDD active protection system detected an abnormal sensor error and to "diagnose the sensor device, run PC Doctor DOS - HDD Actice Protection test and if it still sjows, contact help and support for repair" :(

I only have PC Doctor for windows installed on my TP and that doesn't seem to have the HDD Active Protection test so can't test it. I looked on Lenovo's site for the DOS version but you need to create floppies and I don't have a floppy drive for the TP.

Has anyone had this failure before?

If you have a USB CD/DVD drive, this should help you:

Thanks. I burned that image but all it does is boot to DR Dos prompt.

The istructions say:

QUOTE<---- 1. Turn off the system.
2. Make sure the CD-ROM/DVD drive which is supported as a startup device for your ThinkPad is attached to the system.
3. Turn on the system.
4. While either of the following messages is displayed at the lower left area of the screen, press the F12 key to display the boot menu:
* To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button or the enter key.
Press F12 to choose temporary boot device
* Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility
Press F11 to invoke the Product Recovery program
Press F12 to choose temporary boot device

Note: If a password prompt appears, type in the correct password.

5. Insert the PC-Doctor DOS CD into the CD-ROM/DVD drive.
6. Press the cursor keys to select either of the following devices, and press the Enter to start PC Doctor for DOS:
* ATAPI CDx (x: 0, 1, ...)
* CD-ROM Drive
7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
8. After performing the diagnostics, remove the CD from the CD-ROM/DVD drive and turn off the system.--->END QUOTE

I get to step 6, choose the CD rom, the system boots, I see a whole lot of stuff scroll by about the various devices being initialised etc. and then it just stops a the A:\> dos prompt.

Step 7 never appears. I tried burning a new ISO just in case the first was corrupted but still the same thing.

Getting very frustrated now :banghead:

I would appreciate any input.

Unfortunately, I had to resort to doing a factory restore as I could see no other way of resolving the problem. It all seems to be working fine now and haven't seen any problems since.
