Video memory

#1 Post by aviography » Sun Mar 25, 2007 3:17 pm

Ordered an 87445BU a couple of days ago and it should come in by Tuesday or Wednesday :D

In the mean time I'm still using the 4.5 years old T23, 1.2 GHz PIII M CPU with 512 MB RAM, the S3 video card has only 16 MB on board video memory.....

I updated to the Windows Media Player 11 a short while ago on this T23, but only just noticed today that some MPEG clips that used to play smoothly in the earlier version of Windows Media Player, are now choppy in the video portion although the audio track is still smooth. Windows Task Manger is showing the performance pegged at 100% CPU continously, with Available Physical Memory hovering around 300 MB.

Questions:

1. Would additional 1 GB of RAM help this situation on the T60? (probably not as this seems to be a case of hitting the CPU limit of the T23)

2. Should the Core-2-Duo 2 GHz make this a complete non-issue with lots of spare headroom left on the CPU?

3. Would a 256 MB video card such as the one in the 8847J2U help this situation?

I'm having second thoughts on if I should stop the impending shippment and re-order the 8847J2U instead.............

Thanks in advance for any comments.

If you are using a T23 as your base for comparison, then everything will be far faster on the T60. Everything you are describing will pretty much be a non-issue for you.

Frankly, I had some issues with WMP11 interfering with other video applications, so I rolled back to WMP10. O' 'coss, I didn't notice any problems at all until I was tweaking around with services trying to shut down the useless WMP services for broadcasting your playlist, so I can blame myself for those.

Use VLC player and do away with the WMP - you'll thank the heavens! (VLC does not run on vista right now though).
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU
