Windows 2000 stops at 70% when starting on T60 in docking st

#1 Post by stephank » Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:08 am

We install our T60 machines with Windows 2000 Professional SP4 english (RIS unattended installation). The Installation is done only with the notebook in the docking station.

The installation runs without showing errors, but after the last restart, W2k stops at about 70 % when displaying the blue progress bar.
This occurs on all our T60s everytime the notebook is in the docking station.
BIOS is current (2.09).

The only workaround I found are all of the following steps:
1. BIOS option 'Security/Fingerprint - Predesktop Authentification' -> Disabled
2. BIOS option 'Security/Fingerprint - Reader Priority' -> Internal Only
3. Start Windows in Safe mode and disable the device 'Biometric / TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor'

I could not found anything in the FAQs or anywhere in the Internet.

On our T60 machines Windows 2000 Professional (SP4 english)

Hello and Welcome to Thinkpads.com!

To answer your question I have a couple of theories. The T60 is quite a new machine, and was designed to run Windows XP and Windows Vista, however Windows 2000 is very similar to Windows XP. My thought is that it has something to do with the security chip. The version of the security chip may simply not work with Windows 2000. Try to disable all security chip functions in the BIOS.

Now you said this happens with the computers in the docking station, does it work properly without the dock? If that is the case, the something with the dock is causing a problem with Windows 2000 and it will not continue to load.

You said you install your computers with Windows 2000, wiping out the original install. Since Windows 2000 is so similar to XP why not use XP. As long as you did not wipe of the the Rescue and Recovery partition, you can perform a system restore by pressing the the blue Thinkvantage button when you turn on the computer. You then will be able to restore to computer back the factory defaults and conditions. If you rolled back to Windows 2000 because the laptops came with Windows Vista, not quite sure what to tell you.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Hello stargate199 and thank you for your suggestions!

We have configured the Security chip BIOS setting as inactive without success.

We are restricted to use Windows 2000 because this is a general requirement of our customer at least until end of this year.

I tried to install Windows without the docking station, but we have the same problem as soon as we put the notebook back to the docking station.

Th only way I see at the moment is to disable the TouchChip driver at the end of the unattended installation.

It seems like there is a conflict with Windows 2000 and the docking station. If the computer will boot normally without it in the dock, then there must be some hardware conflict causing Windows 2000 to crash during the boot cycle. I have not had an experience with the T60 (yet) so I can't have a model to work off of to find the solution.
