Alternative to Thinkpad with a bright screen?
After 4 Thinkpads, I have finally had it with these lame screens. On my flight yesterday I could barely read my T43p because the window shade was open. Walking down the aisle, I see a dozen Mac's and PC's with beautiful bright screens.
Where does a Thinkpad refugee go to get a highly reliable, well supported laptop with a modern screen?

Note from Moderator: Your note wasn't complaining about Thinkpads; it was asking where to get something other than a ThinkPad. Moving this duplicate to Off-Topic where it belongs, and locking the other thread.

Hi Jonathan, I am sort of wondering why you would come to a Thinkpad Community to complain about Thinkpads; we are a community of people who love Thinkpads and come here with problems in the hopes of fixing them and loving our Thinkpads for a while longer. If you need recs for MAC, I'm sure they might have one messageboard website out there. Good luck to you.jonathanmedwards wrote:

Note from Moderator: This is exactly the place to come to complain about ThinkPads. Why on earth would you think it wasn't? We're open to any civil, reasoned discussion about ThinkPads whether it's love 'em, hate 'em, or just want 'em to work.

I can be short sighted when it comes to something I love, that's what I was being. My apologies to the OP, no rudeness intended.Purcy wrote:

Well said. I love my T42 and X60s. At the same time I think their LCDs are way too dim compared with other offerings out there.jonathanmedwards wrote:After 4 Thinkpads, I have finally had it with these lame screens.
X60s has an UltraLight LCD option. I have not had a chance to see it in person but people said it's much brighter.
Other than Thinkpads, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Panasonic W/T/Y series laptops. I had a T2 years ago. It was extremely well built. The LCD was twice as bright as my T42.

As much as I love my 15" flexview T60, I'll be lying of I say I find the brightness on par with other laptops. Sometimes even max brightness is not sufficient when I am sitting near a window during daytime - I moved my desk at home to a dark corner just because of this reason. I wish they were a bit more brighter ...
That said, I love the flexview display - mine is a hydis panel and has no sparkling ... it is gorgeous. I have read a few posts which mentioned that the T60 display is actually brighter than the earlier generations
I don't know why matte and bright don't go well together
I don't want blinding sony brightness on my thinkpad, just a bit more than what they give now

I don't seem to have a problem reading my LCD in bright light. Heck I took my T21 outside in the noon day sun and was able to see it with out much difficulty. By looking at the laptops at Microcenter, HP and Sony seem to have brighter screens, but they are also the glossy kind, so glare is much worse. I think that the glossy screens allow the LCD to look brighter, but I rather prefer a matte finish to my LCD. I bet side by side, the brightness of the LCD on any Thinkpad is just as bright as any other laptop, but the matte finish on the LCD glass itself dispersed the backlight making it look less dim, but I find it also allows for a greater viewing angle.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Now that I think of it, my T21 and 600E are pretty much on par with most of the other computers at MicroCenter. The screen washes out in sunlight than some newer computers that incorporate newer technologies but the actual brightness itself seems perfect.

If I heard correctly, Sony Xbrite actually uses two bulbs so its brightness is actually a physical manifestation of that quality. I wish they made non-glossy versions, though, for the glad.
If you can afford it, get a Panasonic Toughbook. Some of their models have absolutely absurdly bright screens for outdoor work.
As much as I love thinkpads, the screens (minus Flexview) just aren't that impressive. I appreciate the matte, certainly, as well as high-res options and such, but brightness is important too.
With so many innovations in the Thinkpad's history, it seems that Lenovo might be doing more to really boost the Thinkpad's screen technology at some point. With security galore, the best build quality, a friggin' airbag inside, solid yet so lightweight, great power management the awesome keyboard/Trackpoint, the Thinklight, spill proof keyboards, (etc. etc. etc.) the only thing a Thinkpad really lacks these days is a kick-[censored] screen. While the Flexview offers that, I really think a better one should be across the board, at least the T-series for starters.
Maybe I'm just being greedy! Thinkpads sure are great though. (Understatement of the year?)
