T-40 problems real or ???????

#1 Post by kingman99 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 4:44 pm

Hi

Is this for real or is it just an isolated case.

The problems with the T40 series are that 1 of the RAM slots can fail, it has a weak video card and heats up fast.

I happen to like the T-40 but l hate problems.

Is there another T-series 42 ets that would be a better choice?

Thanks

Alan

As mentioned in your other thread, the poster meant the T30 and not the T40. The T30 has the known memory slot problem and the T30 do run hotter because of the P4-m versus the P-M in the T4x series.

I apologize for the confusion. As I stated in the other thread, I said T40 when I meant T30.

Thanks l'm glad that we are all on the same page at the same time.

It's tough being a novice and looing for a used laptop. My biggest concern is the LCD. It has to be as close to perfect as possible.

IBM issued a fix for the memory slot problem (only good on machines that had not yet fried the slot). It was basically an insulator that prevented an occasional short in the slot when a memory card was inserted. I believe IBM was replacing the motherboards as a good will gesture for a while after the warranty ran out. In some instances they replaced the memory chip in the first slot with one of twice the size to effect the functionality of two slots. I'm not sure if they are still doing anything for T30 owners.

my t40 gets hot very fast. i contribute the heat to the addition of 1gb ram, and a wifi card. the wifi card died within two months of use, atheros brand. not sure how im going to keep the new card running, right now i have the machine tuned to 'low performance' and it helps a little. i wonder if there is a bad fan, i only see one inside.

Do you feel hot air coming out of the side of the machine? The T40 is an older (but great) machine. It is entirely possible that the onboard fan is on it's way out. They are pretty cheap and easy to source on e-bay. Get two.

It may well be - I've got the same amount of RAM and an Atheros card in my T40 and the temperature is always hovering in the low 40s, which I think is perfectly satisfactory.

Apply a new layer of thermal compound to the cpu ( artic silver 5 ), maybe the one from factory has dried up and while there clean the heat sink interiors with dry compreser air.
