Estimate weight of 14inch Thinkpad with travel bezel

#1 Post by SpaRood » Mon Mar 26, 2007 5:48 pm

Let's assume you got a standard 14 inch Thinkpad with 2 memory sticks attached and a 6 cell batterij. You replace the CD-drive with a travel bezel. What would the estimated weight be? Is it worth to buy a travel bezel?

The weights of 14.1" T60's (or any other Thinkpad models for that matter) vary quite a bit. If you go to that thread mentioned by deeastman, you'll see that mine weighs 5.22 lbs whereas another member's T60 weighs only 5.00 lbs. Lenovo's site states that the 14.1" T60 "starts at 4.5 lb". That's presumably for the lightest T60, with the optical drive swapped out for a travel bezel. But if you aren't lucky and have a slightly heavier T60 like the one I have, it would probably weigh 4.7 - 4.8 lbs with the travel bezel.

not sure if i'm doing something wrong, but i can't seem to find the details for the travel bezel

i went to lenovo's site and entered my t60's configuration number and looked at all the available accessories.. i can't find the travel bezel (and no idea about FRU)

my experience is that i'm pretty lost when looking for anything on their website, but maybe that is because i haven't used it for extensive periods of time

According to a Lenovo sales rep, the travel bezel is officially 'discontinued'. They checked their warehouse and it is now out of stock. They recommended to search online, including eBay, for the product. Fortunately I was able to find one here in the office (from another laptop), so I'm good for now... but for some bizarre reason Lenovo chooses not to stock it.

today I got my travel bezel. Is it normal that it does not fully close the ultrabay entrance, but at the bottom it is 'curved' to the inside?

Sounds like you have a travel bezel designed for the T4* series. That's what I have and yes, it also has this very minor problem in my T60.

If Lenovo discontinued the travel bezel, how can they still advertise the travel weight?! Isn't that false advertising? (Or maybe they expect people to carry their thinkpads around with a gapping hole where the ultrabay drive is suppose to be?)

I finally had a chance to weigh the travel bezel designed for the T43: 14.30 grams, or 0.03153 lbs. That's roughly the weight of two SODIMMs combined.

I just weighed my T60 (14.1" SXGA+, 2x1GB modules, no AC adapter) with the travel bezel instead of combo drive: 4.82 lbs, i.e. 0.40 lbs lighter than with the optical drive.

The weight also depends greatly on your heatsink and fan assembly, and that depends on your CPU type and graphics option. My T60 with T5600, integrated graphics, SXGA+, 2x1GB, DVD-RAM, 6-cells, weighs 2.3 kg, or just a bit more than 5 lbs.

Since it's integrated graphics, it also comes with the 65W adapter for further weight savings.

From the T61/R61 14.1" HMM:

Travel cover, 9.5 mm: 13N5108
Travel cover, 12.7 mm: 13N5354

I could use a 9mm myself, although I don't even have my T61 in hand yet. :D
