Easy Eject ultrabay HDD in Vista

#1 Post by kulivontot » Tue Mar 27, 2007 4:41 pm

Has anyone been able to get the easy eject stuff to work right in vista? Whenever I want to swap my HDD for a CD drive, windows tells me it is unable to stop the drive. No matter what, I have to unsafely remove the device and risk damage to the disk. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

A running process probably has one or more files open on the external hdd. Try closing your antivirus, defragmenter, or other processes before easy eject. Also close any explorer windows.

i've found that if the hd is bootable then vista can't stop the device.

Only if you booted from the external drive will you be unable to stop (easy eject) that drive.

first off it's not external, it's the ultra bay device. Secondly, I don't run anti-virus and there are no programs running off the drive since it's just used for storage. I've run resource monitor and checked for any processes that access the drive and there are none. I would never have issues like this in XP. Anyone have a solution?

First off ..any removable/ejectable device may be considered external. Secondly disabling anti virus was a suggestion, no one knows what you run or do not run on your pc until you tell us. Thirdly, I have no problems ejecting my ultrabay drive from Vista on my t60 so I doubt it's a vista problem. Fourthly, since I was only attempting to give you suggestions which might help, WHAT'S WITH THE ATTITUDE. A simple "thank you, but that didn't work" would have been more appropriate.

The reason I say this is that I have bootable XP on by external (ultrabay) drive and I usually have no problems easy ejecting it from Vista (which is on my internal drive). The only time I have had problems is when a program/process was accessing the external drive (in my case usually explorer.exe). In your case I would try booting vista in safemode. If easyeject works there then I would compare processes in and out of safemode to try and isolate the culprit. It could be caused by many things and may be difficult to isolate.

You also might want to check if vista is indexing the drive.

Have the same problem: can't unmount my ultrabay hd in Vista. In XP everything is OK. Anyone has any solution?

In my experience this is a Vista problem (and from time to time also in XP) and doesn´t have anything to do with EasyEject in particular, i.e. with or without EasyEject the result would be the same. I believe there has been an update from M$ that improves this situation a bit. However, this is still a problem, and there is only one solution: to exit all programs that access the ultrabay drive before attempting at all to eject the drive. Otherwise the "safely remove hardware" feature gives an error and the drive is removable only after shutdown, i.e. if the machine reboots after such an error with the drive still in the ultrabay, the latter will still be non-removable (same error showing up).

Hope this helps
