A21P Mini PCI question

#1 Post by kadf88 » Mon Sep 27, 2004 7:00 pm

I just got an A21P 2629-HWU and for some reason my NIC is not getting detected after a fresh install of Win2K (after format). Do i need drivers before i can see the NIC? the seller says that the NIC doesn't work but i don't see how it doesn't work whereas the modem will work (aren't they the same mini PCI nic card?). Should I buy a new 3com 10/100 + 56K modem nic?

I believe so. Some years ago my HD crashed. Rather than use the restore CDs on the new HD, I tried to install Win2k from a regular install CD. I ran into problems with the NIC until I got the proper driver from IBM's website. Of course, without a working NIC I needed another PC to get the driver and then get the driver to the A21p. (Back then, flash drives weren't common, a CD burner wasn't handy and the driver was too big to fit on a floppy.)

AFAIK the NIC and modem are independent devices that happen to share the same circuit board.

Are you sure you have a Mini-PCI Combo Card (Network&Modem) in your A21p?
The A21p could be ordered with the modem Mini-PCI Card or with the combined NIC/Modem-card.
So maybe you haven't the appropriate hardware installed for NIC-support...

Kadf88,

Your HWU should have a 3Com eth/modem combo mini-PCI card.

Flip the unit over, open the mini-PCI access panel and eyeball the card.

However, it's not completely unknown for one or the other portions of a mini-PCI card to fail and the other portion continue to work.
