Corrosion on the docking pins

#1 Post by afcabot » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:00 pm

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, as I was directed to this great site from someone at IBM. She said that you folks might be able to answer my questions, so here I go.

A while back, I had a minor spill at my office and some liquid got onto the back of my X40. There didn't seem to be any damage, and I dried it off as quickly as possible. But now there appears to be some sort of copper oxidation on the pins in the back of the laptop. Everything works fine, except when I plug it into the docking station. Then it freezes up or doesn't recognize the fact that it is docked.

The advice I did receive was to clean the pins with a Q-Tip and alcohol. Do you think this will take care of the oxidation? Or should I be looking for a new motherboard?

Any information you can provide would be most helpful.

Thanks so much!

-Alex

hi and welcome to the club..

those pins are VERY small and fragile..
also i think that plug is soldered to the system board so it is a very costly repair job and its NOT under warranty..

the Q-tip and alcohol might work if there is only surface corrosion..
but i think those pins are gold plated and if the gold plating is gone...

Thanks for the info! I think I'll try it. And if it doesn't work...I'm in the market for a new motherboard, if anyone can get me a good deal!!!

Oh well... :D
