DVD - region lock?

#1 Post by kartak.mahino » Wed Mar 28, 2007 3:04 pm

When I bought my A series 4 years ago, it had a restriciton of being able to change the region code for upto 5 DVD plays. After that it will become region locked.

I was wondering if same is the case with Z series?

This is pretty much SOP, regardless of brand or model.

I'm using DVD Region Killer on my Z60m without any problems and the best thing is that the software is for free. I have Power DVD and VLC and it works so far pretty well.
Thinkpad Z60m and happy with it

I'm kind of curious -- is DVD Region Killer needed at all, if you're playing using VLC? The reason I'm asking is, VLC comes with DeCSS and so it can decode DVDs from any region -- provided it can get the raw data from the disc.

Some drive/firmware/OS combinations (like Matshita+OS X) prevent raw access and so even VLC would not work; on the other hand, on practically every PC I've used, even though the drive is supposedly RPC-2, VLC works just fine and I never even bother setting the region code at all.

I've never tried VLC without DVD Region Killer but maybe I should give it a try. PowerDVD and probably other fancier media player definitely don't work without any additional software.

In my opinion this entire process is absolutely absurd. I have a lot of European DVD which I bought some time ago and I think I should have the right to play those on any PC or DVD player I want and not some DVD drive dictating me where I can and where not. At least the software is free.

I would still load DVD Region Killer or a similar program (I use AnyDVD) since Windows itself also has DVD regions. I had a drive a few years ago, probably a Pioneer, that would detect the disc that's put in and change the region automatically. Installing AnyDVD stopped it from doing that.

That 's scary. I've never had anything but the DVD playing software asking me whether I want to change the region or not. If the OS or, worse, the drive firmware were to do it automatically I'd be rather annoyed.

Have you ever played any DVD from other regions except region 1?

My DVDRW is a Hitachi which can be easily fooled by software or by using a RPC1 (region free) firmware.

Have a look at www.rpc1.org, the guys are doing amazing work there.

tadler, i m sorry to be the one breaking the bad news here,
but those crap Matshita drives can't be RCPed :(

On the Z61t i was lucky enough to have a LG, on the T61 it had the crappy Matshita, but as i need mostly a Region Free DVD, i took the LG to the T61.

I don't know what piss is in the head of Matshita drives, but one thing is for sure, it makes many of their owners to throw them and get something else (LG, Samsung, Pioneer, etc)

They are so [censored], that even with RPC1 emulation software you can't read other zone DVD's.

Sorry mate.. :x

I'm also fed up with my MatShitA drive. I was thinking to order a replacement drive, but I don't know if there are other manufacturers available for the T60? I looked at lenovo.com and found some drives, but it only gives you the model numbers.

Does anyone know which drives can be "RPC-ed" for the T60?
