Slow Boot

I have a T-60 which seems to be booting very slowly. It takes roughly 4.5 minutes for this thing to start up. I have gone into msconfig and turned off all but 5-6 items and it still is very slow. I wish I could see what is going on under that welcome screen which displays for almost 2.5 minutes and once that goes away I get the start button and taskbar but nothing else for almost 2 minutes.

I found a little start up utility (on this forum) and have used that. It shows only the graphics card, power management (I am wondering if this is the problem), battery management, access connection, wireless driver and the touch pad loading.

Another problem I have is the clock will change back 1 hour almost weekly with me. When this happens the taskbar also reverts back to the XP start/taskbar (and I have it configured for the windows classic) . If I attempt to change it I loose all my font settings making the display very hard to read.

I found that if I unchecked "Access Connections Main Service" under "Services" (in MSCONFIG) that my boot times were extended, but not to 5 minutes.

Is it possible that you have mapped network drives, or are connecting to a SAN? These could cause this type of response.

Huh? What is a SAN?

SAN == Small Area network (I guess).

Do you have CSS (Client Security Solution) installed and running on your system? If you don't use it uninstall it - the fingerprint reader will work without it. CSS was causing me very slow bootup times and after I uninstalled it, my system boots in about 40 seconds.

Storage Area Network, i.e. a hard disk drive that is accessible to the network for reading and writing.

I have no mapped drives, no network drives. I did change the channel on my router lately from 11 to 5. I have since changed it back to 11 and the time is shortened somewhat. I am not loading access conenctions and notice a little bit better time. I ran defrag. It seesm to be hanging on that welcome screen. Wish I could see what is going on under that.

I am not using the fingerprint reader. I have uninstalled it as well as the security client, also Norton.

If you want to see what is loading on start-up, try this;

What it does;
This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your start-up folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys.

I just downloaded and tried to install bootVis. It won't even install. It says I have a bad cab file. How do I fix that and could that be my problem???? I didn't write the specific file but I could if someone thinks it is helpful.

If you are running Vista, it won't. Otherwise, it could be referring to a .cab file in the bootvis download.

Ya I thinbk it was the bootvis download. I went to a different site and downloaded. It works. I also ran SFC and did not have an errors. I also searched for the corrupt file and found nothing so it probably was bootvis.

I now boot is just over 2 minutes. What is average???

I have many processes disabled in the Boot List. After boot, I show 25 running processes. My boot time is 45 sec.

How big is your hard drive?

60gb, 5400rpm.

I have removed much bloatware and have only 2 Non-Microsoft SERVICES enabled in MSCONFIG
(Access Connections Main Service & ThinkPad PM Service).

Also, in MSCONFIG - STARTUP, I have only 5 items checked.
1) SynTPLpr.
2) TPHKMGR.
3) PWRMGRTR.
4) BatLogEX.
5) SynTPEnh

The only thing I am loading that you are not is the ATI card and panel. My hard drive is also double the size of yours so I would expect that would be an issue.

I have around 70 processes running at starup and my system boots in about 45 seconds - I dont think the # of processes affect a system with > 1GB of memory. There is something else wrong with your system ... If you have not defragmented your disc yet, you can try defragmenting with Perfect Disk 8 (Smart placement mode). But I doubt that it wil help at all - the issue is with your registry and there are a million ways things can wrong in that thing ... I am sure that by now you would have edited msconfig and seen every bootup program.

I seriously suggest a factory restore if you can afford it, remembering your wireless issues that you reported before.It will removes all headaches once and for all.

ya gator, I have not only run diskeeper but also perfect disk. i also ran disk cleanup and have deleted all that junk whcih BTW was a lot. I ran a disk diagnostic utility and that was all OK.

So I know this sounds silly but I am trying to do a system restore and my thinkvanntage button is now working (AGAIN). How do you suggest I run it and once it is restored what should I do first???

I assume you have burnt a copy of restore disks - use pop the first CD into the drive and it is straight forward from there. If you have not burnt disks, press the thinkvantage button when the system is showing the BIOS boot screen. Once the T60 boots into rescue and recovery, see the options listed on the left panel. Just choose the option to restore to factory defaults and follow the instructions.

I am sure you are aware that you will lose all data on your laptop, so make sure that you take a backup of whatever you need. Once restored, run system update and choose what updates you actually need. Do not install updates until you are sure that it will not break your system.

I am at work now, and I'll go home and post the exact versions of what I have on my system.

Just have to say that that the autoruns program from sysinternals is amazing!

I used to swear by msconfig, but now I have a much better tool.

was your boot delay ever fixed?
you should try defraging, benchmarking your harddrive also check if scandisk is acting up...

I now boot in 59 seconds! I should have done this weeks ago. I am thinking about partitioning my HD into 2 (one programs and one data), so if this happens again I will be all set to restore just the program/OS partition. Ideas??? My HD is 120gb.

My wireless is working so far although I did think I was beginning to have an issue after installing my anti virus. It seemed to have disconnected while I did a scan in DOS. My I got back into windows I had no wireless. I believe I was too far from my router (although were I typically work). The card would not connect. Should also mention I was on battery. Once I moved closer I was able to reconnect. Seems there is a setting for this card to either save power or deliver performance.

I think all cards have that feature when running on battery. Are you using Windows to configure your wifi or some other program?

House Kitten, you can use partition magic for making partitions on your system. I have sent you a PM about this, please see.

As for the wireless, go to advanced setting in Access connections for the profile you are using and you can change the power setting.

My t43 takes more than 4 minutes to be ready to work. But during this time it is loading a lot of stuff, including spyware doc, antivirus, firewall, CSS, palm sync, etc.

Is there a way to know if the boot is taking too long given the applications that are launching?
