Which one would you prefre T43 or X60s

1. T43, 1.86ghz, 80G HD, 1GB RAM, SXGA+ 14.1'
2. X60s, 1.66ghz (LV2400), 60G HD, 1GB RAM, XGA 12.1'

which is the dream machine of your own from the 2 options above.

considering I already own a T42p with sxga+ screen, I would certainly go for the X60s.

I have owned an X31 before, so I kind of know the formfactor of those 12" machines. It`s great fun to use them. If you don`t need the SXGA+ resolution that T43 offers, go for the X60s

I think it's a matter of preference, so it's relative to what you like but for me I'd take the t43. Seems like xga on that small of a screen would require a lot of scrolling, and it says it comes with vista but the graphics would be limited.

yup, this is the matter of preference too.
Depends on what your daily usage on the Thinkpad Machine.
somehow, SXGA+ is only meant for Graphic Designer or some other programmer that need a few windows to be opened at the same time.
i read one of the thread in the forum, ones would advise to take the XGA screen if you gonna surf/stay on the internet very often, because they claimed that SXGA+ would eventually get an eye strain.
any comments regarding this context?

IMO, even SXGA+ doesn't offer enough real estate to allow multiple windows to be viewed side by side -- I usually need to maximize each window. For me, UXGA is barely enough for viewing two or more windows simultaneously, and WUXGA is much better.

Yep, definately a matter of personal preference. I find that on my desktop, I want high resolution and lots of screen space. So I have 2 20.1 inch Samsung 1600x1200 displays in a dual head configuration. Works great to rotate one 90 degrees for reading long documents.

However, on my Thinkpad, I have an XGA screen and while I've thought about whether or not I'll go XGA or SXGA+on the next one, I will probably end up staying with XGA. For me, when I'm in the bookstore, sitting on the couch, in low lighting situations, etc, the XGA display seems to work better for me.

Definately something that everyone has to find their own sweet spot on.

Between these two, I'd go for the lightness of X60s. It will also be slightly faster than the T43, I expect.

hmm, for me it doesn't seems like a giant boost on the speed for the comparison of these 2 Thinkpad.

correct me if i'm wrong.

I recently had the same decision to make.

In the end I chose a T43P running Windows XP Professional, with SXGA at 2.13 GHz. Superb machine, and very, very good value. I guess this is because it's end of life with the T60s taking over. I'd tried a T40 series machine out - my son used one, and was very pleased with it, though he did have his hard drive fail at a bad moment last year. Yes - it is a little noisier and warmer than the old T23.

Another interesting comparison may be power consumption. In normal use my T43P consumes only 24 watts, and just 1 watt on standby. But a T60 may be even more efficient as this has become a key design point. I'd be interested to know.

One factor that might push you to the T60 is they are now available with Vista. My T43 comes with WinXP Professional.

I wanted SXGA - my old work machine had this and I really missed this when I left and ended up using a T23 XGA machine for cost reasons. (That machine has lasted me over 5 years by the way - not bad! Still going strong.) You can increase all the font sizes, of course, but I like the extra information on the screen.

Again, you may want to have the latest hardware. But I am price sensitive but wanted a Thinkpad. There's still nothing to compare with them in my view. I must have used 20 or 30 other Laptops in the past year at least briefly (mostly my students' machines) and nothing has the solid feel not to mention the Trackpoint which I just could not do without.

Personally I would go with an X60s. I already have a T41p and an X24, and I find that I use the X24 more often than the T41p, unless I need to bring in the big guns for something really demmanding. I really like the form factor of the X series. You can use them like an ultraportable when on the road, and then dock them up and hook them to a nice monitor when at home. The lack of an optical drive is not a problem, unless you expect to use this on the go (which I don't.)

I have been reading a lot of reviews of the X60s specifically, and I am really tempted to get one even though I don't need it. I had a T60 assigned by my former employer for a while, and I thought it was a very solid computer. I just couldn't bring myself to like the subtle appearance changes as opposed to the T4x series (what's with the curved edges on the palmrest/LCD lid?) The X60s looks more like a traditional Thinkpad in that sense. The ability to run a Core Duo LV and have the battery last for a long time is also very tempting.

Heck, I know I am getting an X60s. The real question is when.

A used T43 typically sells for around $650 whereas a used X60s sells for around $1,000, so more people can afford the former. Also, most people want to have a big screen and a built-in optical drive. For these reasons, it's much easier to sell a T43 than an X60s.

Since I already have a T41p I would go for the X60s. That being said if I could only have one laptop then it would have to be the T43.

I'd probably say X60s by virtue of the form factor.

Not much else - both of them would suit my needs much more than adequately.
