Mixing RAM speed modules

#1 Post by LeoB » Fri Mar 30, 2007 5:32 pm

I've got a T60 enroute to me with 1GB of RAM, which I presume will be two 512MB sticks.

I have a 1GB stick from an R52.

The modules appear identical except the T60 is PC2-5300, CL=5, DDR2-667 and the R52 1GB is PC2-4200, CL=4 DDR2-5300.

Would it be possible to replace one 512MB module with the 1GB module from the R52?

Thanks,
Leo

Usually, IBM/Lenovo does the right thing and ships with a single 1GB module. That's been the case with every thinkpad I've received.

I'm not sure about mixing memory speeds in a T60. The system will probably throttle to the speed of the slowest memory, but I'm not sure.

Ron:

Well, I've had the opposite experience. Both ThinkPads I bought came with two smaller RAM modules rather than one large one.

Maybe I'll get lucky this time.

Thanks,

My T60 came with one memery module, and yes, if you insert a slower RAM-module they both run at the slower speed.

Kimx:

Does your T60 run well with 1GB? I've been reading various posts and they suggest that for normal use (e-mail, some surfing, word processing, no games or video editing, etc.) that more than 1GB may be superfluous.

Thanks,
Leo

That's correct. And if you put in a 1GB PC2-4200 module, you would slow down the machine even though the memory size goes up.

Yes I run my machine with 1GB, and it's very rare that I run out of memory.

I should note that I'm currently using vista as my primary OS, and I can't fell any slowdown compared to running XP.
