Combine Wired and Wireless for Downloading

#1 Post by PointZero » Fri Mar 30, 2007 7:25 pm

Does anyone know how to mediate downloads to use both ethernet and wireless? I know that OS X has the capability to utilize both a wired and wireless connection, and my roommate demonstrated this feature by lapping me in downloading a file broken into equal sized pieces. I was hoping that Windows had the same capability, or if there was a program out there that could mediate this.

I don't see how that could be useful in most cases since the internet connection is usually the bottleneck when talking about bandwidth. Unless you have two connections to the internet.
I can neither see how that could work since the default gateway on your PC will be used to connect to the site you are downloading from and it's not possible to have two active default gateways or two active static routes pointing to the same destination. Are you sure he is actually using two network interfaces to download the same file from the same source? That sounds a bit strange unless he has some software to team the network interfaces so they act like one interface with a single IP address.

There are several download managers available that could speed up your downloads though. I use Internet Download Manager that is able to setup several TCP sessions and each of them download a part of the file. That way you will get much better download speed and is able to utilize more of your available bandwidth. For example I have a pretty fast internet connection and downloads from Microsoft is about 4-5 times faster for me when using Internet Download Manager. So that's one program that could do what you ask except using both your ethernet and wireless to download from the same source.
