To Make Vista Shine

#1 Post by normanrich » Sun Apr 01, 2007 10:54 am

Try this. (I found out accidentally)
Do a clean install. (this if nothing else frees up about 10-15gig of windows files)
And, Only Install the Critical Thinkpad drivers,
There are really just a few
IBMPM driver
Trackpoint (not sure if this is required)

But skip ALL of the utilities that may bring out some enhances feature that you seldom use, eg. keyboard optimizer.

I never realized this but each utility requires its own process, (and often a second process to look for updates)

The results, Thinkpad x-31, shutdown and startup are 1/2 elapsed time as XP. And the machine is just more responsive.

Btw, stay away from OneCare, it's intrusive, and ineffective.

Your're correct in that Vista can run well on a thinkpad without most of the thinkpad drivers (that some refer to as bloatware but I don't). The only drivers I'm using is Power manager, Utra Nav utility, Ultra Nav Driver.

I have also found that Vista runs EXCEPTIONALLY well without all the extra "fluff" that IBM/Lenovo want us to install.

Significantly nicer user experience than XP was.

Kyocera: do you have the hotkey driver?

Well, XP runs much better without all the fancy ThinkVantage software too.

No, I had it on the first trial run install so I could get the OSD but opted not to use it.

Ati Display Driver

#6 Post by normanrich » Sun Apr 01, 2007 11:59 am

One quesion though. Have a Thinkpad x-31 with some verions of ATI Radeon Video. Currently driver causes blue-screen errors in ati3duag.dll, and latest Catalyst willnot install. Catalyst Installation Maganer fails is xxdetect.dll ATI passed the problem to IBM/Lenovo.

Has anyone found a stable set of ATI drivers?

Thanks,

Yeah I can second that. I found my T43 2687-D3U ran very well without any of the bling from IBM. I dont think any of those extras are needed.....that is unless you want to slow down your computer.

Agree that disconnecting the utilities would have helped xp as well. I just never had any idea what a large affect this 'addon software' was having on the performace of my laptop.
Vista is no 'magic bullet'. The upgrade has been very difficult.
And key compatibility issues remain.

do you think the thinkvantage software would be responsible for decreased battery life too?

i've noticed that ever since upgrading to vista, i've been getting 3 hours (with screen brightness at lowest and NO wireless). I used to get a little over 5 hours (i am using an extended battery for the z61t).

i don't mind the performance affects of thinkvantage, but 3 hours of battery life with an extended battery life and at maximum battery life settings is what i used to get w/ maximum settings (wireless on, medium screen brightness).

on that note, i've read how vista doesn't significantly decrease battery life as much as some people feared. what have you guys experienced, in terms of battery life?

Vista Power Consumption

#14 Post by normanrich » Tue Apr 03, 2007 12:11 am

My apologies. When i first loaded Vista, using the IBM/Lenovo Matrix, there appeared Microsoft issued set of patches. When i read the 'text' file it referred to 'improving battery performance'. However, when i checked the IBM site today, I saw no evidence of it. When i first installed Vista I followed the upgrate guide that IBM/Lennovo published.

It is possible that Microsoft has now incorporated these patches in the standard release. I can check further, but best bet is a search of Microsoft Site. Or a well phrased 'google'. if anything turns up, will let you know. also have had good luck with the vista community discussion groups. finally, microsoft offers free of charge chat, and e-mail support requests, for the first 90 days after you have installed vista. hope this helps,

No it isn't. I really don't know what that patch is or why it would be needed.

that patch is part of the power management enchancement performance for vista.

After downloading and istalling I now am able to select "hibernate" when lid is closed again, wheras before it was missing.

Can you please try the link again? This is exactly the problem I posted about previously and no one responded.

tballx, I don't get what you mean, my hibernation works fine now after applying the patch from Lenovo, I also am up to date on the Vista updates from MS.

The Link I posted above (powerpoint presentation on power mgmt in Vista) was to clarify what the patch is for in Vista as Temetka said he did not know what the patch was for.

Well, I take that back, hibernation was working fine for a while and now once again it is gone from my global power settings, all I have is SLEEP and DO NOTHING and SHUT DOWN no more hibernation.
Very strange. :? Don't know if it has something to do with my dual boot scenario or what.

No luck, it will hibernate fine until I reboot, then hibernation option is gone from the global power settings. After adding the powercfg -h on from the command prompt it comes back.

THAT is what I mean. Upon a clean install, I have it. After installation of IBM updates, I don't....at all.

AHAA!! It worked. And that guide from Khouresh Ghazi is wrong. His command should be "powercfg -h on" instead of "powercfg /hibernate on." The error in his guide is on page 135.

Thanks!!
