Cannot create recovery CDs R&R v3
Cannot create recovery CDs R&R v3
I just recently installed R&R on T42p and I wanted to create recovery CDs to restore factory contents. I had a DVD writer ordered and I decided to wait until it arrived. Now I have 2 problems or questions. The main problem is it doesn't work. When I select the option to create the recovery media, I get the following error: "the files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found". Also, my understanding was that this process would make the backup from data in the restore partition, not from the current state of my "C" drive. Other things I have read here make me think that is not the case.
Aha, another T42 user experiencing the bugs in R&R v3.1. (However mine was different -- see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=40103).
To Richk's second question:
Start>Programs>ThinkVantage>Create_Recovery_Media>Rescue_Media>Create_a_set_of_Product_Recovery_disks_now
produces the set of disks with which you can return to factory state when you cannot access Windows and when even F11 or the blue button don't work pre-desktop.
Start>Programs>ThinkVantage>Rescue_and_Recovery>Back_up_your_hard_drive produces an R&R backup, either on the internal drive or externally, with which you can return to the present state. The program will offer to make the external drive (or media?: the bug prevents me from knowing) bootable. Then you can return to that saved state even when you cannot access Windows.

I get the same error "the files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found". My machine was rebuilt last week from recovery CD's (6 of them!) so I wanted to create a single recovery DVD instead. I ran all the Lenovo updates, then tried to create the recovery media and just get that error every time.

I believe the following is related to the problem. I think once you upgrade Rescue and Recovery, you lose the option to create the Product Recovery Discs.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 677#282239Symptom
Any machine that has IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore Ultra 1.0 or IBM Rescue and Recovery 2.0 factory preloaded, then installs Rescue and Recovery 3.0, will lose the ability to have Rescue and Recovery installed on the machine after a Restore to Factory contents action is selected when booting from the computer's hard drive.
Rescue and Recovery 3.0 updates the contents of the recovery environment stored on the computer's hard drive. Restoring to Factory contents does not alter the recovery environment and could result in an inconsistent configuration. Therefore, the ability for the factory preload to install IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore Ultra 1.0 or IBM Rescue and Recovery 2.0 after Rescue and Recovery 3.0 has been installed was purposely disabled.
Solution
It is recommended that you create Recovery CDs prior to installing any software. If this is done, Restoring to Factory contents using the Recovery CDs will restore both the recovery environment as well as the preloaded version of Rescue and Recovery into Windows. If the Recovery CDs were not created before installing Rescue and Recovery 3.0, before doing a Restore to Factory Contents you may wish to copy the Rescue and Recovery 3.0 installation files off to external media so you will not have to download from the Web again.

Re: Cannot create recovery CDs R&R v3
Here is another way to get the error. Your rescue & recovery program must have language files that match the restore partition, or it won't work. Solution: download the FULL rescue & recovery package (~480 MB) with ALL languages ...
