Not possible. When you got your ThinPad you are not paying for a full version of XP like you bought it from the store. You are getting an OEM version.espresso wrote:I want to load xp on my t42 without all the ibm software. Will ibm send me just the xp pro cds instead the recovery disks?

you dont need their cd, you can make your own xp cd. all you need is the is386 folder found on your c: drive go here to see how to create a cd out of just the i386 folder. if you still cant figure it out, feel free to pm me and i can help you out.
XP OEM serial numbers are different than XP Retail serial numbers and you can't use one to install the other.espresso wrote:I just tried to do that on my ibm but xp said the key was invalid. Could the key be tied to a specific type of xp cd?

The only difference between OEM, Retail, and Volume copies is the key each will accept during install. The actual contents are the same.espresso wrote:Are there OEM cds that are full copies of xp without the other oem software?
Rather than provide the physical XP installation CD, IBM provides a set of Recovery CDs which also include additional products. You'll also find the OS installation contents in the i386 directory on your hard drive and the other products in the IBMTOOLS and DRIVERS dirs. The unattended.txt file in the i386 dir already includes a valid key for that installation so you won't need any other key if you use this for a rebuild.
If you want a "clean" install follow the recommendations of making your own bootable XP cd using the contents of the i386 dir. Many folks have done this already, including me.
