T23 Security chip
Is there a document out there somewhere that will show me what models of the T23 had what security option (chip, embedded whathaveyou)?
Mine is a 2648-NU1
Also, what does the NU1 mean? I know the 2648 just differentiates a Warrany type. but I was wondering what the NU1 means.

Have you tried the Tawbook? Download it here.Andersonjoe711 wrote:Is there a document out there somewhere that will show me what models of the T23 had what security option (chip, embedded whathaveyou)?
It does not have the Secure Chip:Andersonjoe711 wrote:Mine is a 2648-NU1

Difference between the 2647 and 2648 model type seems to be related to the warranty that was offered with the system. Otherwise, the specifications are the same.

I bought my T23 partly because it had the security chip. My eyes glossed over after I tried reading how to use and implement it. It's now been 5 years, and my chip is still unused.Andersonjoe711 wrote:How hard do you think it would be to put a secure chip in?
I'm still on my original OS installation with a lot of code artifacts from program uninstalls that failed. I'm thinking of wiping my hard drive and restoring the system from the rescue partition. If I do restore my drive, maybe, I'll take another look at using the chip.
Did you have a specific need for the chip? What's the chip used for again?

I couldn't find a 2647-NU1 anywhere either.rkawakami wrote:Difference between the 2647 and 2648 model type seems to be related to the warranty that was offered with the system. Otherwise, the specifications are the same.
I'd be clueless if there was a separate 2647 umber that macthed directly up to my 2648-NU1. Which leads me back to step one: How do I find out if my laptop has the ability to be upgraded with this chip?

The following was obtained from Supports and download site:
Product: ThinkPad T22 2647-NU1
Original description: PIII 1.0GHz (256KB), 256MB RAM, 20.0GB HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 8x-2.3x DVD, Intel combo, TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win98SE
Product: ThinkPad T23 2648-NU1
Original description: PIII-M 1.13GHz (512KB), 256MB RAM, 30.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD,24x-10x CD-ROM, Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win2000
Which is very strange. I had searched this site a couple of months ago by changing just the "7" to an "8" for some models that I have and they were the same. I entered some 2647 and 2648 serial numbers I have into the Warranty site and it returned two different service plans. Hmm.. maybe more investigation into this is needed...
My understanding is that any T23 can be upgraded with the security chip. What it does and how to use it, I don't know. I have a couple of systems that IBM says have the secure chip (the HNU I'm using right now), but I've never taken this system apart to verify it's actually there (you have to pull the motherboard out). According to the HMM, these are the systems which have the secure chip (all are listed as 2647):
5Lx, 9Lx, DLT, HNU, 5Dx, 5Fx, 5Hx, 5Jx, 5Nx, 5Mx, 9Dx, 9Fx, 9Hx, 9Jx, 9Nx, 9Mx, DFx, HNx, NNx, 5Rx, 5Sx, 5Ux, 9Rx, 9Sx, 9Ux, HSU ("x" can be any character).
