X-series wish-list (what would make me buy one)

#1 Post by jayk » Tue Apr 03, 2007 3:56 pm

This would be my perfect X-series:

1. Wide-screen, high-res display (at least 1280x800), with LED-backlight.
2. Touchpad in addition to trackpoint
3. Docking station with full-size PCIe slot to handle multiple-monitor/high-performance video cards (I really like having at least 2 screens, and none of the laptop-based solutions for this look very good).

I'm not trying to start a flame-war, and I don't really want to hear about how great the 4:3 screen is and how much touchpads suck - hopefully Lenovo will continue to produce models that make everyone happy.

I'm just helping Lenovo out with their market research. :)

I don't want to fuel any potential flame war, but the Dell Latitude D420 ticks almost all your boxes (not sure of the LED backlight though.)

I almost bought one over the X60s, until further research told me the fan is noisy (esp with the Core Duo variant), it has a 1.8" HDD, and the performance of the 1.2GHz ULV Core Duo made me worry as to whether it really could last for 2-3 years as an ultraportable/desktop replacement.

By an amazing stroke of luck and timing, the X60s ended up being almost 50% cheaper too :o

My wish-list

1. 12.1" or 13" widescreen display, 1280x800 or 1440x900 options
2. with the WS display giving extra case width, use the full width T-series keyboard
3. also use that width to store more Li-Ion cells in the "non sticking out" battery
4. DVI on the Ultrabase
5. compatibility with T60/Z60 series docking solutions
6. keep the weight under 1.5kg with battery
MacBook Pro Retina 13.3 2560x1600 | i5-4258U | 8GB | 256GB SSD | BT+abgnac
Surface Pro 3 12.0 2160x1440 | i5-4300U | 8GB | 256GB SSD | BT+abgnac

Funny you should mention the D420... I bought one last year off Dell's outlet site. I bought it to take on a vacation and it's been working great ever since.

What I'd really like is a Thinkpad-quality D420 (the keyboard and pointing devices on the D420 are sub-Thinkpad, and mechanical quality is lower) with a Sony display (Sony really seems to have the best displays in laptops, plus they have some with LED backlights).

  • ExpressCard Slot.
    Fast SDHC reader
Better screen resolution (I don't care about wide but why not)
Solution (whatever the implementation) to allow an external GPU (like in the advanced dock).
Integrated DVD burner (not a big issue, I prefer good keyboard)
TP X23 +UBX2 +cdrw
TP X60 +UBX6 +dvdrw slim + floppy + 8cells battery
