Freaky backlight problems

#1 Post by DragonMaster » Tue Apr 03, 2007 7:46 pm

I bought a T22 recently, with a non-working backlight. I bought a new inverter, I installed it, and every times the computer started, it made a loud high-pitched whine and produced a strange smell. No lights at all showed up.

Should I look for the cable, the system board, the replacement inverter or the CCFL?

Updates:

I opened the LCD panel, and there's no bulb at all anymore. It's just lots of pieces of glass, nothing else. Anyone can tell me what kind of CCFL lamp the laptop needs, I'm about to place an order at Mouser and they have good quality CCFLs there. I just need dimensions.

Well that would answer your problems. I would just go ahead and replace the entire LCD because the backlight tube had broken inside the LCD. Replacing the CCFL tube is very tricky as anyone here will tell you. Replacing the LCD is the best options.

It's not that hard to disassemble at least, I had the time to remove the LCD frame and everything to pull the remaining of the bulb out since my first post.

Only 2 inches are gone in bits. The glass pieces didn't come out until I got access to the CCFL.

The LCD still seems pretty good, under sunlight it doesn't seem to have dead pixels or anything.

This site has some information about the various size CCFLs used:

Check the links in the left frame: CCFL Cross Ref and CCFL Backlight

edit: It looks like their MS20290 CCFL fits the 14.1" T22. Overall length seems to be 290mm.

Yes so I searched a bit, and the MS20290 is a 2mm diameter, 290mm long CCFL.

JKL Lamps lists that their BF20292-24B, which is 2mm longer, fits an other laptop with the same LCD panel, so I suppose it should be fine. I'm ordering other things from Mouser at the same time, so even if the CCFL is $12 instead of $10, I save on shipping.

Hi, old topics. Finally, I bought a CCFL and changed the ond one in May. The screen works now. Only after the backlight has been repaired, I figured out that one of the layers behind the LCD panel(the thickest ± transparent one) had a ¾" crack on it, which makes the backlighting very unequal on that side. There was so much static in there, the static got lots of glass bits to stick everywhere between the layers. At least, I've been able to clean this. An other problem is that the bottom is brighter as I can't get the layers to stick well together on that part of the screen.
