Battery Charging Indicator Light

#1 Post by ronbo613 » Wed Apr 04, 2007 1:56 pm

I've got a new aftermarket battery for the T30 and I want to make sure what the charging light indicators mean.

Solid Green-Fully charged
Blinking Green-Battery is charging
Solid Orange-Battery needs to be charged
Blinking Orange-Battery problem

Is this correct? The aftermarket battery is blinking green right now, the Windows Power Options shows the battery is charging. I can't recall the original IBM blinking green, just going from orange to green.

When on AC power
solid Green- 100% charged
blinking green- battery charging, charge level over 80%
solid orange- battery charging
blinking orange- battery problem

When on battery power
solid green- battery discharging
blinking orange- battery power low, find outlet soon.

When I put this aftermarket battery in my T30, the indicator light was blinking green. A quick Google search, confirmed by Stargate199, means the battery is almost fully charged. Stoked, I figure, new battery for the Thinkpad. Windows Power Options menu shows two hours and five minutes of battery power.
Unplug the AC power adapter and think I'll run the battery down a few times to calibrate, condition it, whatever they call it, when after about four minutes, crash to black screen, no power. Start it up again, Power Options says 98% charged, two hours of power. Four minutes later, black screen, dead in the water.
Go to RMA the battery, the sellers accuse me of swapping it with another battery to cheat them out of their $50. I've only got one stinking IBM battery that's half dead, I couldn't swap batteries if I wanted to. I would have gone with the batteryrefill.com guys, but I couldn't spare the one battery I've got.
I've been trying to buy a battery for my Thinkpad on eBay for nearly a month. $150 later, I don't have a single battery to show for it.
eBay stinks.

You may need to perform several cycle (around 5) to make sure the battery is working properly. This way the circuitry knows the capacity and tell that information to the computer. Use the battery health function in Battery Maximiser to see what the state of the battery is. If after several cycles it is still not working, demand a refund, you were sold a faulty product and should be entitled to a refund.

Pretty tough to watch the Thinkpad crash to a black screen five times to make sure the cheapo Chinese battery is working.
I would have gone with batteryrefill.com, but I've only got one battery and couldn't send it to them for a month to work on it.
I never would have thought it would have been so tough to get a crappy laptop battery.

I bought this one from ebayer 'campus111'.
I'm delighted with it. All the internal data is there, manufacturer, capacity, cycles, mfg-date, first use date etc., even the IBM-FRU is in there.

I've got battery envy.
The only information the cheap battery I bought was that it was manufactured by "Sun Battery".
I guess with the aftermarket batteries, it's a crapshoot. Throw down your $50 and hope for the best.
