DIY-make WIFI signal stronger w/low-cost material-BIG PICS!

#1 Post by Benson » Thu Apr 05, 2007 2:59 am

(My English is not very well, using your imagination if you can’t catch what I said. Hahaha…)
(Forward from http://www.51nb.com/forum/thread-201823-1-1.html by 帅哥)

As we know, AP signal will be very weak if it through the wall, especially if our room’s square is very large or room’s structure is complex.
How to improve this situation? We can buy another AP and set up a net-bridge, or we can use professional beamed/all-direction antenna instead of original AP antenna, but all of these solution are complex and high-cost.
Then, what we should do? Now let me introduce one solution to you.

Tools and materials:
1) forfex
2) art design knives
3) electrician adhesive tape
4) empty noisy tear-off tin

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... f27WPv.jpg

Steps:
1) Cleanout the noisy tear-off tin, then use art design knives cut it through its juncture.

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... ujGmx7.jpg

2) then cut another site open (location: opposite the juncture, 180 degree)

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... ADibFk.jpg

3) Cut it half of a cycle through the bottom/top (different direction)

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... R1ZM9R.jpg

4) Result:

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... RjgLXX.jpg

5) Prune away incision and two sharp-cut corners

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... pYi1Uy.jpg

6) Broach two holes in top/bottom, the diameter should be little larger than the AP antenna.

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... SO2pH2.jpg

7) Now cut the electrician adhesive tape into short segment, and stick them around the hole.

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... CCPbzF.jpg

8) Ok, it is finished. The finial result:

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... 788bnG.jpg

Usage:

If you want to make the signal stronger, you just need turn the direction to your location.

Result:

Original signal (through 3 walls):

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... i1qN1z.jpg

New signal (through 3 walls):

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... 8YN8RC.jpg

Attention:

It will let the back signal become weak, the signal only is 20% after it through 2 walls.

Remark:

According the theory that metal winding can effect the signal, you can cut open the top/bottom through the red line.
The signal should be stronger. (just theory, not practice)

See http://www.51nb.com/forum/attachments/m ... EoPKJZ.jpg

The same theory, below method also can make the signal strong : )

Wow that's a nice work. You have very detailed steps and photos.
My approach was on the client by using dish-like antenna of the USB wireless adapter. It boost the signal all right but lost the portability.

51nb.com apparently doesn't approve of you stealing bandwidth by hosting their pictures.... they all appear broken on my machine.

yeah, your method should make the signal stronger, but it is complex for a freshman.
