Oh, no - T42 dead in the water!

#1 Post by sktn77a » Thu Apr 05, 2007 3:42 pm

Well, my son's T42 went belly-up today. He said he got a message about the USB ports/power hub and then it died altogether. Won't boot up - lights light up, fan turns on but no further signs of life. Give the horror stories about Solectron service, before I send it in I wanted to consult the experts here as to their experiences with this phenomenon.

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

It's going to need a new motherboard. If you feel like shipping it to my store, I can preorder the parts so that they're waiting when it arrives. The only thing I can't do is cover shipping costs.

If I preorder, I can gurantee that it won't spend more than 24 hours in our store.

Are you an authorized IBM service/repair center, as this is a warranty item?

This doesn't sound good :(
One thing which worked in similar circumstances that brought a TP back to life, (why / how - I still don't know), was to take the battery out and wait about a minute, put it back in and attach the power cord. Press F1 and hold it pressed while starting normally, keep F1 pressed untill the TP starts or ....

Sorry it's not a definite solution, but it' worth a try and can't cause any further damage. Good Luck

Yes... PM me for details. I'm working now, so it may take me a minute to respond.

Hi Andy: Thanks for the suggestion but, no joy. I tried holding down F1 (and the Access IBM button) but I don't even get a BIOS screen; Zippo...... Nada...... Squat...... :(

Sorry to hear it :(
just as a thought, if you hear the hard drive working you could try an external screen. Again, I'm building possibly false hopes here. If that doesn't work I think mitchellst or the Lenovo warranty service are your joker.

Well... Chances are that it'll work out fine for you. It seems pretty hard to mess up.

Good luck anyway though.

Mitchelst: You're too kind - I've read the posts on this forum about Solectron Service. I'm not religious but I'm deep in prayer right now!

Well, got my T42 back today. Actually it should have come yesterday but I wasn't home when DHL tried to deliver it.

"Replaced planar board".

So far, so good - no obvious catastrophies (eg wrong mtherboard with the wrong graphics adapter) and quick repair and service. Wish me luck over the next 48 hours that everything will be compos mentis!

Well, another two weeks post repair (motherboard replacement) by Solectron and everything is just fine. There have been numerous posts reporting negative experiences with IBM/Lenovo/Solectron service, so I think it's important that positive experiences are reported, too.

I can't imagine any other harware company providing this level of consumer product support/repair. My confidence in the Thinkpad is restored!

I guess you can take a jab or two now for putting your T42 in the water in the first place, eh?!  Of course, that wasn't my first thought when I read the subject line ("dead in the water"), but it did cross my mind.

Glad everything is back up and running! I had a motherboard replaced a few months ago and it was virtually painless. I say 'virtually' because I got a 'b'-only wireless card back instead of the 'b/g' card it went in with (you might want to check yours?) But that was quickly sorted out and I was on my way. Two cheers for IBM warranty service!
